Ask Not What AI Can Do For You, Ask What You Can Do With An AI

Last week I wrote about ChatGPT-4 being an earth shattering development. Since that post things have already accelerated. People are taking the reins of this bull and running with it. I decided to give Midjourney a spin for a logo design I have been working on for a while. Before I get there though, I wanted to show you another thing AI is doing. Check out this video by Microsoft for their AI "Co-pilot".

Setting Microsoft aside, anyone who has made a powerpoint, tried to sort through excel spreadsheets, etc. can see how powerful this can be as it can cut down on time and streamline productivity. Now, apply this to say Proton Mail plus Brave, maybe open office and other non Facebook, Apple or Google apps.

Now, back to my logo. I went to Midjourney and gave it the following parameters, "a minimalistic logo with the gemstone benitoite & neptunite overlayed on deer antlers without the deer. All on a white background". I've used Photoshop and Illustrator since the early 2000's, more recently GIMP, but it would still take me days, if at all, to get as polished a design as these.

The logos looked great, but did not include benitoite or neptunite and did include the deer which I had asked it not to. To be fair it did use shades of blue that benitoite comes in and it did only include the deer's head. With that I decided to ask it to give me variations of the two logos I liked 1 &2.

Keep in mind all of these designs took less than 60 seconds, more close to 30 seconds, to render.

I decide to work on these two versions.

However they are not complete. I need to go in and modify them to include benitoite & neptunite crystals. I also want to either delete any facial features on the deer or delete the deer head entirely. Unfortunately this might take me days to get right though!!

This development in AI & the coming voice commands is going to be revolutionary. However, like any tool, you have to know how to use it. Like this, this, THIS!

It's not just engineering though, it will affect everything online and much offline, but know the right questions to ask will be key. It's ask not what the AI can do for you, ask what you can do with an AI.

If you aren't familiar with Midjourney, they operate through Discord. Go to their site, https://www.midjourney.com/ and either click on "Get started" to learn more or jump right in by clicking "Join Beta" which will take you to their Discord.

Thanks for reading!

That is an interesting view of the Ai, and yes I think you have to be able to pinpoint the prompt that is needed to really make a very good logo, art or whatever do you want AI make for you.

Just like a tool, you have to be skilled to use it properly.

Have you seen this news?

The London Metal Exchange announced Friday that several nickel shipments didn't actually contain the valuable metal—and reports soon revealed they actually contained bags of rocks.

I think what a lot of people forget when they judge AI as being unfair or non-human is that in the end, people still need to look at the product that AI makes and make decisions about it. With logos, the designer (you in this case) will still go on and make adjustments and complete the design. It’s a variation on a process that master artists have used for centuries.

I'm glad you chimed in on this. Since you are doing your own designs I wanted to hear from someone else with skin in the game. While it does decrease the creativity the end product is still the result of the creator whether further edited or not. I honestly think it is going to increase the value of traditional artists & designers who create without an AI, but there will be far fewer.

I am still on the fence about everything, but I'm definitely dipping my toes. It's inevitable, but my concern is we are going to be overloaded with AI designs. Time will tell.

I am against using AI to write out your posts, ideas, works though.

I haven’t used it yet, but after looking at your post and reading your wants, I could see a lot of areas in those AI generated images to leap from.

For me, it’s a starting point, but only because I want to design something myself. In that sense, I don’t see it as being any different from doing a Google image search to look for ideas before getting started, or different from looking through a book of designs even, which is common practice.

I’m not even against people using it to write posts, but I would hope that they would say that it was written by AI and left unedited, and explain the process that was involved.

I think supporting AI created work, for me anyway, will come down to learning about the decisions being made to generate the work, and also the decisions being made to accept the final work.

If you can be presented with five pieces of text, why are you choosing one over the others, and why do you want to share that with an audience?

Creating is that decision making process, regardless of the tools, in my opinion.
