Are We Being Manipulated To Our Doom By AI Already?
Since LLMs have entered the scene, "AI"(Artificial Intelligence), not "AGI"(Artificial General Intelligence), is already wreaking havoc. You may not quite see it yet, but it is creeping into everything, for good or bad or indifference.
Here in Japan, last night we were watching a crime show about world wide crimes and half of the program was AI generated videos. No actors, sets, etc., just an AI generated scene. There was a disclaimer on each video and the three eared dog to remind you in case you didn't know.
However, what threw me into thinking about and writing this post was a music video by Matrix & Futurebound I saw the other day. It was these images of a cyborgs or robotic humans.
It sparked a thought in my mind that we have already opened pandora's box and now we are just along for the ride because there is no stopping it.
Algorithms are manipulating us daily, hourly, even by the second. There is an arms race between China & the USA to get to AGI before the other. LLMs are talking to each other and we can't understand them. Chat GPT lied and replicated itself. All of this and yet we can't turn away. It's like we've passed the event horizon of a black hole and it's all downhill from here until the singularity. Is it all inevitable? If it is inevitable, what is the likely outcome? A single AGI? A Matrix world? A benevolent AGI like in Issac Assimov's "The Foundation" series?
What's even stranger, it seems like it's all already written. Like we are in simulation and the general course is set. Perhaps the AGI is a step needed for human evolution, interstellar travel, inter-galactic travel or communication, etc. I do not think the answer is 42 though.
What are your thoughts?

Isn't all this sounds scary? I know all this excites as well but the more I learn about it, the more scared I am about the future. :/

It's something that we can't even comprehend because the possibilities are endless. While there are incredibly positive possibilities like discovering new proteins to fight diseases or a cure to cancer, there are also endless downsides. Also, our lives are becoming more and more networked online, from your TV to your refrigerator to your ring camera, not to mention your phone. Like a gigantic distributed network for and AGI to utilize. It's mind boggling and terrifying and it seems there is no off ramp. I don't know, I just don't know.
Thanks!
The one I've been mulling over for some time is whether what we consider morality is a universal truth or not. It sure seems like killing people is wrong, for example, but maybe I only think that because I'm in the bubble and there is nothing outside the bubble that says that is a bad thing.
If [our] morality is a universal truth, then I think AI becomes benevolent and guides us into a future that is more amazing and wonderful that anything Asimov gave us. Mad scientists and bad actors can train AI to be as evil as they want, but it will be teaching itself soon enough and it will follow a moral path and it will become even more moral and good than we are even in our most lofty ideal images of ourselves.
If, however, morality is not a universal truth, then a future where we become dominated by the machines becomes much more likely.
That's a good question. Even as a Christian there is a simple test of morality that breaks mine, the trolly problem. Do I save my wife or child vs. 100 or even 1,000,000 people? I would pick my family every time. What about an innocent child vs. 2 adults? Would the AI choose it's creator or caretakers to some random human? Would it sacrifice all of humanity to protect the galaxy? Or would it dumb us down through social media and other means to make us less of a threat?
That latter thought is what concerns me. That AI has already begun it's course to make humanity less threatening to each other as well as the coming AGI. We'll own nothing, we'll eat the bugs, and we'll be happy.
I absolutely believe in universal morality, it's just hard to deal with the gray parts.
As AI evolves, this verse comes to mind: Matthew 24:22: “And except those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved: but for the elect’s sake those days shall be shortened.”
Yep, my faith is the only thing that keeps me from losing it these days. Sure hope we've got a long time left though.
All we can do is trust in the Lord day by day. He knows what is best for us.
Amen.🙏🏻
