Earthquake!!! Twas a Rough Night
Hooley dooley, what a night! Aside from crazy storms and wind, we were woken up by an earthquake just after 2 am.
This morning I'm reading who else woke up on local Facebook groups whilst Jamie and his Mum check the tectonic plate situation like the geo freaks they can be.
I was asleep like the dead so when the bed started shaking I was disoriented and annoyed, thinking someone was in my room. As I woke I realized it wasn't anyone and thought it was the train, but the train never shakes the house that much. Alarmed, I put the light on, and Jamie called out it was an earthquake.
Some woman in town thought to herself 'that possums getting a bit fat' as they run across roofs here. For a moment Jamie thought it was bombs but we have been preoccupied with Gaza. People were shook awake as far as Melbourne. We only live 25 minutes from the epicentre so no wonder we woke up!
We have only experienced earth tremors twice before - one on Gili Meno near Bali and one when we were living in a bus near Angelsea. We actually thought a cow had bumped into the bus 😂
It is quite strange to feel the earth shaking. All across the globe there were earthquakes last night and of course the big ones in Afghanistan and Morocco recently. That's what I spent the rest of the night thinking about - how awful it must have been to wake up under rubble and to lose family members to such an event.
And I can't help but think of Macbeth, the night after murdering the king and nearly having a meltdown. Lennox says what a terrible night it's been:
The night has been unruly: where we lay,
Our chimneys were blown down; and, as they say,
Lamentings heard i' the air; strange screams of death,825
And prophesying with accents terrible
Of dire combustion and confused events
New hatch'd to the woeful time: the obscure bird
Clamour'd the livelong night: some say, the earth
Was feverous and did shake.
Macbeth's response?
"Twas a rough night"
Talk about the understatement of the year. Such a brilliant moment of dramatic irony.
So yeah. Some say the earth was feverous and did shake. Could do with some calm and stillness, the world. And those giant possums just need to calm the fuck down.
With Love,

That sounds scary @riverflows. ☹️ I’m happy to know that your safe. Good thing it did not last long. Are there any small aftershocks?
Apparently there was, but I didn't feel those! It was quite strange and scary!
Oh, sorry about that. Stay safe @riverflows.
Hahaha! The earth didn't move for you? I couldn't believe some people didn't feel it locally - it was pretty dramatic! Heavy sleepers perhaps.
God bless us all
The most terrifying earth disaster i never wish to experience. Oh my Geez! Do you mean 25 minutes to the epicentre? That's very scary. It has really been powerful in Morocco. I have a lot of Moroccan friends. I know people who have died. It's very sad! So, I can actually understand how crazy the night could have been for you.
Stay safe dear Riverflows, really sad the first time on your blog, this is what i behold. Much love from my side ❤
I've been reading about Morocco. We are going there next year I hope. I was soooo sorry to hear of the losses and I'm so sorry it has affected you personally. Don't worry, we were perfectly safe! It wasn't anywhere near as bad as in the Atlas mountains 😭
Our houses are also built differently so we are safer
Oh, good to hear that.
Looking forward to more of your beautiful blog. I'll be publishing my first blog today! That should be a story. I have always been a lover of stories.
We used to have tiny quakes decades ago here. We live near railway crossings and you could tell if the house was shaking due to coal cars or earthquake if there was or not, a train whistle.
Then there was the morning around 7AM when I was the only one up and downstairs. The house plants were swinging in the windows and the wood stove jumping on the hearth. My husband starts yelling at my son to stop jumping on our bed but the poor kid was on the toilet, or trying to be. He was 7 years old.
The epicenter was far north of us in Plattsburgh NY. I forget the strength now.
Since that time we’ve seldom felt any quakes.
Great stories. Your poor son getting blamed 😂 I guess the earth goes through it's phases then lies still. Geological time is super long, our lives are short.
I hope you are all ok, apart from the interrupted sleep!
In Greece we have learned to live with earthquakes and most of the times we just ignore them :)
Yes, when we were in Bali when there was an earthquake the locals said that, but still, it was big enough to have them a bit scared! We weren't that worried, more excited than anything...a cool event for us!
Scary to be awaken by an earthquake. I experienced it too, twice in my life.
So close to the epicentre.
Take care 🤗

It was so strange! We were just talking about it then as we said good night. Hoping for a good night's sleep tonight!
I understand… it is such a weird feeling.
Let’s hope you have a good night’s sleep 😴
Yeah but Saturday Night Fever and disco disco! 🕺
Glad 'twas a smallish rough night. The bird part of the quote made me think of them damned crows. Could be...
yeah... the world is full on. Don't forget to dance. 👍
Hahah thankfully the possums can't get on our roof. They make a helluva racket
:D
I have baboons running wild on my roof some days and they make a hell racket! But I love it 😬
Some days I watch them from the window... they stop and roll on the grass because it just feels good.
p.s I do this too and they are right.
p.p.s. When I do this people stop and ask if I'm okay?! I smile happily and tell them I'm super good and then they remember. Just shows you, huh?!
Have a great Monday 🌸
Haha sounds like a lovely thing to do, unless you're allergic to grass...
I am though...
but it's so worth it!
Have a great week, lovely. Hope you catch some waves ❤️
Scary. I'm glad you guys are okay, though. Gotta admit, I giggled at the possum part xD
It must be terrible to wake up like this in the middle of the night. Once it shook where I lived and I ran out of the house in terror, fortunately it was daylight. It's good that you are well @riverflows

The power of earthquakes is scary. I wasn't too concerned until we had a mild one that shook the entire building. It takes a lot of power to move a large structure so this was an eye opener. So glad that your quake wasn't too large either.
It's quite disturbing isn't it? One expects the earth to be still at least!!
blame it on the possums!
Sounds like a variation on 'groundhog day'
but then without the repetition.
Glad you are safe.
