THE SCIENCE OF PERSONAL CHOICE
Hi everyone, welcome to the Hive Reachout community weekly prompt 42. My name is @rishagamo. I will be writing on the topic “Popular Statement you don’t agree with.”

Bad companies corrupt good manners might be true for some, but it is not a statement that is necessarily applicable to all. I lean more toward the statement that says to train up a child in the way he will go so that when he grows, he shall not depart from it. A well-trained child is not likely to succumb to pressure from peers easily. By well-trained, I mean a child that understands the values of the training given to them; a child that comprehends the reasons behind the lessons; a child that grasps the benefits of being good and avoiding evil.

Children of the same parent and upbringing may exhibit differences in character. One may have a deep understanding of the lessons, while the other may not. Training a child doesn’t rely solely on parental lessons; it also depends on the child's interpretation of those lessons. I’ll illustrate this with an example of two children whose father is a drunkard. One became a drunkard, while the other had never drunk alcohol in their life. The first was asked why he had a drinking problem, and he responded that he learned it from their father. The second was asked the same question and replied that he grew up watching their father drink and decided not to drink alcohol. Two students, same teacher, but different lessons learned.

Having bad company doesn’t necessarily mean having bad manners. In my experience, I’ve seen friends with opposite behaviors, yet one didn’t affect the other. There’s value in every friendship. Judging and picking friends based on the saying “bad company corrupts good manners” would make you miss out on a lot in life.
On a final note, character change or influence is an independent choice, we all choose what we want to influence us, and certain characters and behaviors are not forced down on us. We see what people around us do, and we decide independently on what we do with such examples, whether to emulate or to ignore, having a good understanding of what is good and evil, and why those things are evil or good and also the benefits and consequences to all of these behaviors.
