THE EFIK PEOPLE OF NIGERIA
DESIGNED WITH CANVA
Culture can simply be defined as a way of life of a particular group of people, which encompasses the language they speak, the food they eat, the clothes they wear, their beliefs, values and norms.
To me, culture can be seen as a behavioural pattern that an individual emulates. For example, it can be said that it is in his culture to behave in a certain way, being that the individual is well known for that behavioural trait.
Among the various cultures in Nigeria, the cultures of the people living in the North are to some extent alike, for instance, it is in the culture of most Northerners that it is the responsibility of the parents or family of the bride to be buy the house utilities and items for the couples, this includes all kitchen utensils, the furniture’s in the sitting room and also the bedroom.
Another culture that is popular in the country is also buying boxes. The proposed groom is expected to buy a full set of boxes for his proposed bride as part of his obligation before he can be allowed to get married to her. This practice is done in most cultures in Nigeria.
The culture I love so much in Nigeria is the culture of the Efik People, particularly their food. I love me some Afang soup and the Edikang Ikong soup. When I was in school, my bunk mate and closest friend was from the Efik culture. After testing this food, I will always look forward to the next visiting day, when his mother will come to visit and bring us some Edikang Ikong soup and some Afang soup. Even after leaving the school some years later, I would still visit their house to enjoy his mother's cooking (God rest her soul). It became one of my favourite soups.
If I were to adopt any culture, it would be that of the Efik people, because of their food. They place importance on food; it is how they show hospitality to visitors. They will offer you food as a way to show that they are hospitable and that you are accepted among them.
Thank you for reading. My name is @rishagamo.
Afang soup and Edika ikong soup are very tasty. Have you even tasted Ekpang? It's another meal from that tribe. Absolutely tasty. And you're right about them, they're very hospitable.
