Upgrade or downgrade? - Going back to the iPhone 7 Plus. [ENG/ESP]

As I have mentioned on several occasions within this community, my phone is a Xiaomi Mi 11 lite, a device that I acquired almost two years ago with which I honestly felt quite satisfied, especially because (after an intensive search for weeks) it represented everything what I needed in a smartphone: a decent camera, good performance and an operating system that gave me the freedom of Android but at the same time had its own identity.

Unfortunately, in recent weeks my experience began to worsen considerably as a direct consequence of several sudden failures that may or may not have a solution.

In fact, I remember writing a post about this, where I talked about how my device's Bluetooth had become unusable when trying to listen to audio of any kind on my ear pods, and then I explained that the main camera had stopped working .

The common characteristic of both damages was: the randomness of the damage in question, considering that it had not received a physical blow that could affect the hardware, or failing that, some type of update or new application that could affect the software.

Both were problems that I tried to navigate with all the patience in the world, because I repeat: I love my phone and the virtues continue to outweigh the defects, the main camera and Bluetooth could be classified as secondary uses (For me they are not) and honestly they are not I feel financially prepared for a forced upgrade.

However, the final straw was this: overnight my phone decided to stop reading my SIM (and any other) leaving it unusable unless it was connected to a Wi-Fi network.

Long story short, the point is that I had to start using an old iPhone 7 Plus that my sister had in storage while I try to figure out what I'm going to do with my main phone.

I want to clarify that my purpose with this post is not to review the iPhone 7 Plus, nor to negatively criticize what until a couple of weeks ago I considered a brilliant device (my 11 Lite) but I think there are a couple of interesting reflections that we can make regarding to my situation.

The first thing that came to mind when my phone started to fail is that unlike many of my previous smartphones, for some reason at no point in the two years in which I kept using it extensively had I felt the need to upgrade. , especially because I feel like we are at a time where technology has advanced enough that (having chosen the right model) we can go 3-5 years without having to upgrade to something better, essentially every modern phone can do the same and the differences are generally something that responds to very specific needs of each user (processor, ram, battery, design, etc.).

Another thing I must mention is how surprising the iPhone is when it comes to withstanding the passage of time, although I had previously had a lot of contact with iOS, it is always pleasant to find an operating system that is so flexible with what it considers obsolete and what it doesn't.

Although it is evident that in many aspects the 7 Plus cannot compete with any modern phone, it is surprising the level of stability it maintains in most basic tasks, and one or another a little more “hardcore”, apart from this, it is It is undeniable that in terms of aesthetics and raw design Apple operates on another level.

The irony is that despite these virtues I still miss my old phone, and it is inevitable for me to continue using it for the little that I can, such as writing this post.

Como he mencionado en varias ocasiones dentro de esta comunidad mi teléfono es un Xiaomi Mi 11 lite, un dispositivo que adquirí hace casi dos años con el que honestamente me sentía bastante satisfecho, especialmente porque (luego de una búsqueda intensiva durante semanas) representaba todo lo que necesitaba en un smartphone: una cámara decente, buen rendimiento y un sistema operativo que me diera la libertad de Android pero que al mismo tiempo tuviera una identidad propia.

Lastimosamente estas últimas semanas mi experiencia empezó a empeorar considerablemente como consecuencia directa de varias fallas repentinas que podrían tener o no solución.

De hecho, recuerdo que redacté un post sobre esto, en donde hablaba de cómo el Bluetooth de mi dispositivo había quedado inutilizable cuando se trataba de escuchar audio de cualquier tipo en mis ear pods, y luego, expliqué que la cámara principal habia dejado de funcionar.

La característica común de ambos daños era: lo aleatorio del daño en cuestión, considerando que no había recibido un golpe físico que pudiese afectar el hardware, o en su defecto, algún tipo de actualización o aplicación nueva que pudiese afectar el software.

Ambos fueron problemas que intente navegar con toda la paciencia del mundo, porque repito: amo mi teléfono y las virtudes siguen sobrepasando los defectos, la cámara principal y el Bluetooth podrían llegarse a catalogar como usos secundarios (Para mi no lo son) y honestamente no me siento preparado económicamente para un upgrade forzosos.

No obstante, la gota que derramó el vaso fue la siguiente: de la noche a la mañana mi teléfono decidió dejar de leer mi SIM (y cualquier otra) dejándolo inutilizable a menos de que estuviese conectado a una red wifi.

Si ánimos de hacer más larga la historia, el punto es que tuve que empezar a utilizar un viejo iPhone 7 Plus que mi hermana tenía guardado mientras intento resolver qué haré con mi teléfono principal.

Quiero aclarar que mi finalidad con este post no es reseñar el iPhone 7 Plus, ni criticar negativamente a lo que hasta hace un par de semanas consideraba un dispositivo brillante (mi 11 Lite) pero creo qué hay un par de reflexiones interesante que podemos hacer respecto a mi situación.

Lo primero que se me vino a la mente cuando mi teléfono empezó a fallar es que a diferencia de muchos de mis smartphones anteriores por alguna razón en ningún momento de los dos años en los que me mantuve utilizándolo extensivamente había sentido una necesidad de hacer un upgrade, especialmente porque siento que nos encontramos en un momento en donde la tecnología ha avanzado suficiente como para que (habiendo escogido el modelo correcto) podamos pasar 3-5 años sin tener que cambiar por algo mejor, en esencia cada teléfono moderno puede hacer lo mismo y las diferencias son generalmente algo que responde a exigencias muy específicas de cada usuario (procesador, ram, batería, diseño, etc).

Otra cosa que debo mencionar es lo sorprendente que resultan los iPhone cuando se trata de soportar El Paso del tiempo, aunque anteriormente había tenido mucho contacto con iOS siempre es grato encontrarse con un sistema operativo que es tan flexible con lo que considera obsoleto y lo que no.

Aunque es evidente que en muchos aspectos el 7 Plus no puede competir con ningún teléfono moderno, es sorprendente el nivel de estabilidad que mantiene en la mayoría de las tareas básicas, y una que otra un poco más “hardcore”, aparte de esto, es innegable que en términos de estética y diseño crudo Apple opera en otro nivel.

La ironía es que a pesar de esas virtudes sigo extrañando mi viejo teléfono, y es inevitable para mí seguir utilizandolo para lo poco que puedo, como escribir este post.
