"Mimo" - using Duolingo for programmers for the first time. [ENG/ESP]

Although I generally use this community to talk about video games or leisure applications that I use in my day to day, from time to time I like to talk about those that serve a slightly more "educational" purpose, or simply make our day to day easier.

Do you know Duolingo? A fairly famous application that allows us to learn languages easily, especially useful for those looking to get familiar with the basics of a new language without having to invest absurd amounts of money.

The key that Duolingo had compared to other courses (both free and paid) and applications, was the way in which its interface turned learning into a kind of video game, with levels, challenges, score tables, and daily and weekly goals that force them to return regularly.

I personally am surprised that this same formula has not been applied to other learning areas, or at least I believed so until I met "Mimo", an application that using this same scheme proposes us to learn to program in different languages, or at least , take the initial steps in this world.

And it is that although it is easy to question the effectiveness that it has to meet this objective, it is undeniable that it serves to close a gap between absolute ignorance and fundamental notions.

In just a couple of hours, to give a brief example, I learned what HTML was (essentially), how it was structured and the main commands it uses: Create buttons, determine the title of a page, divide paragraphs, mark information in bold. or italics etc.

Perhaps the only drawback is that everything works under a payment model, which, although it is not excessively priced, can be a deal breaker for those users who are not willing to make an investment of this type without knowing if it will have results.

For that, logically we have a one-week free trial, this same trial is the one that I have been using as a basis for my post.

MIMO isn't as solid as a "real" course, but it's interesting to see it as an accessible springboard that can spark a love for the whole thing about programming, it's intuitive, it's fun, and it can be a window into getting familiar with a hobby/ work that is becoming more and more important.p

Here, deviating a bit from the subject, I feel that this is a wonderful example of the possibilities that technology has, when we break the old schemes and begin to recognize that there are unconventional ways of learning that can be just as or more effective.

Obviously I hope to continue dedicating time to Mimo and, perhaps, then I will be encouraged to pay the premium subscription.

Aunque generalmente uso esta comunidad para hablar de videojuegos o aplicaciones de ocio que utilizo en mi día a día, de vez en cuando me gusta hablar de aquellas que sirven un propósito un poco más "educativo", o, simplemente facilitan nuestro día a día.

¿Conocen Duolingo? Una aplicación bastante famosa que nos permite aprender idiomas con facilidad, especialmente útil para aquellos que buscan familiarizarse con las nociones básicas de una nueva lengua sin necesidad de invertir cantidades absurdas de dinero.

La clave que tuvo Duolingo frente a otros cursos (Tanto gratis como pagos) y aplicaciones, era la forma en la que su interfaz convertía el aprender en una suerte de videojuego, con niveles, desafios, tablas de puntuaciones y metas diarias y semanales que nos obligan a regresar regularmente.

A mi personalmente me sorprende que esta misma fórmula no se haya aplicado a otras áreas de aprendizaje, o al menos esto creía hasta que conocí "Mimo", una aplicación que usando este mismo esquema nos propone aprender a programar en distintos lenguajes, o al menos, dar los pasos iniciales en este mundo.

Y es que a pesar de que sea fácil cuestionar la efectividad que tiene para cumplir este objetivo, es innegable que sirve para cerrar una brecha entre la ignorancia absoluta y las nociones fundamentales.

En tan solo un par de horas, por poner un breve ejemplo, aprendí que era (en esencia) HTML, como se estructuraba y los comandos principales que utiliza: Crear botones, determinar el título de una página, dividir párrafos, señalar información en negrita o cursiva, etc.

Quizá la única pega sea que todo funciona bajo un modelo de pago, que si bien no tiene un precio excesivo si puede resultar un deal breaker para aquellos usuarios que no se encuentren dispuestos a realizar una inversión de este tipo sin saber si tendrá resultados.

Para eso lógicamente tenemos una prueba gratis de una semana, esta misma prueba es la que he estado usando como fundamento para mí post.

MIMO no es tan sólido como un curso "real", pero es interesante verlo como un trampolín accesible que nos puede despertar el amor por todo el tema de la programación, es intuitivo, divertido, y puede ser una ventana para familiarizarnos con un hobby/trabajo que cada vez adquiere más y más relevancia.

Aquí, desviandome un poco del tema, siento que está es una muestra maravillosa de las posibilidades que tiene la tecnología, cuando rompemos los viejos esquemas y empezamos a reconocer que existen formas poco convencionales de aprender, que pueden ser igual o más efectivas.

Obviamente espero seguir dedicándole tiempo a Mimo y, quizá, luego me anime a pagar la suscripción premium.
