Android TV or Google TV - Did I made the right choice? [ENG/ESP]

A couple of weeks ago we decided to buy a new television for the living room, considering that Smart TVs have recently dropped in price and it is possible to get a good option without having to pay an absurd amount of money.

As I explained in this post it was not an easy decision, but we finally decided to acquire a 55-inch Magnavox (50MEZ572M1) that fits perfectly with our requirements: 4K resolution, Android TV, a design with fairly thin edges and a good number of multimedia ports to connect all our devices.

There were obviously "better" options, higher quality panels, Google-certified versions of Android TV or other "extra options" that could prove valuable in the future (Especially Bluetooth, something Magnavox lacks) but considering the price ( Less than $300) it was easy to ignore all these shortcomings.

However, as with modern phones, I find it important to try to discuss the positive and negative points of each device, since there are so many options available on the market, it is as if each person has a totally different alternative that fits perfectly with your criteria.

Aside from this, here I can answer a fairly simple question: Was this 55-inch Magnavox TV worth purchasing?

The short answer remains the same: yes, after several years with HD being the standard in the entertainment industry, 4K is finally beginning to penetrate the most mainstream sectors, and, unlike what happened when the technology began to Enter, the prices are affordable even in those more premium brands like LG.

One of the things I wanted to do first with this television was to revisit several of my favorite movies using this resolution: gems like La La Land, Interstellar or Goodfellas are enhanced by the large amount of detail that we can find in their 4K versions. .

Although the 50MEZ572M1 panel may suffer a little in rooms where natural light is excessive, I am very satisfied with the quality and range of colors it can display, something that is evidently supported by its HDR.

Movies and television series are two of the things that we can get the most out of with this TV, especially because unlike video games the refresh rate does not need to be particularly high.

Now, does this mean that it is not good for gaming? It depends, in more casual environments it serves its purpose, but for professional-level practices there are better alternatives (even if size has to be sacrificed).

From the beginning, what made me most insecure about this television was the absence of Google certification, something that means that despite having a relatively recent version of Android TV, it lacks universal support... in other words If Magnavox doesn't keep this TV up to date it could become outdated quickly, and the OS stability might not be as good.

Ironically, this implies several advantages and disadvantages, considering that the lack of certification allows us to have more customization options from the moment we start the device for the first time (In fact, the 50MEZ572M1 includes two third-party app stores that are not linked to Google Play, apart from Google Play itself), but it also complicates the whole issue of updates and correcting bugs that these applications may present a little, for example, I have always had problems getting any version of Amazon Prime to work correctly.

In my experience, on the other hand, Google's certification is not a guarantee of reliability either, suffering a lot on televisions with low-performance processors that simply do not support its interface.

Pick your poison, I guess.

In the end, most of the problems can be avoided, and in the same way I have become accustomed to the alternative interface that this SmarTV has... apart from that, you can always enhance the experience with Apps like MHShare that allow you to mirror the screen and transmit content as if it were an ordinary Chromecast.

Most of the apps are identical to what we'll see on any other Android/Google TV, so hey, after a couple of months I still think it was an excellent purchase.

Hace un par de semanas decidimos adquirir un nuevo televisor para la sala de estar, considerando que recientemente los Smart TV han bajado de precio y es posible conseguir una buena opción sin tener que pagar una cantidad absurda de dinero.

Cómo expuse en esta publicación no fue una decisión sencilla, pero finalmente decidimos adquirir un Magnavox de 55 pulgadas (50MEZ572M1) que encaja perfectamente con nuestros requerimientos: resolución de 4K, Android TV, un diseño con bordes bastante delgados y una buena cantidad de puertos multimedia para conectar todos nuestros aparatos.

Evidentemente existían opciones "mejores", paneles de mayor calidad, versiones de Android TV certificadas por Google u otras "opciones extra" que podrían resultar valiosas en el futuro (Especialmente el Bluetooth, algo de lo que esté Magnavox carece) pero considerando el precio (Menos de 300$) era fácil ignorar todas estas carencias.

No obstante, tal y como ocurre con los teléfonos modernos, me parece importante tratar de debatir los puntos positivos y negativos de cada aparato, ya que existen tantas opciones disponibles en el mercado, que es como si cada persona tuviese una alternativa totalmente diferente que encaja a la perfección con su criterio.

Aparte de esto, así puedo responder una pregunta bastante simple: ¿Valió la pena adquirir este TV Magnavox de 55 pulgadas?

La respuesta corta sigue siendo la misma: si, luego de varios años con el HD siendo el estandard en la industria del entretenimiento finalmente el 4K empieza a calar en los sectores más mainstream, y, a diferencia de lo que ocurría cuando la tecnología empezó a introducirse, los precios son asequibles incluso en aquellas marcas más premium como LG.

Una de las cosas que quería hacer primero con este televisor era revisitar varias de mis películas favoritas haciendo uso de esta resolución: joyas como La La Land, Interstellar o Goodfellas se ven enaltecidos por la gran cantidad de detalles que podemos encontrar en sus versiones de 4K.

Si bien el panel del 50MEZ572M1 puede sufrir un poco en habitaciones en dónde la luz natural sea excesiva, me siento muy satisfecho con la calidad y el rango de los colores que puede demostrar, algo que evidentemente se ve apoyado por su HDR.

Las películas y las series de televisión son dos de las cosas a las que le podemos sacar más provecho con este TV, especialmente porque a diferencia de los videojuegos la tasa de refresco no necesita ser particularmente alta.

Ahora, ¿Esto quiere decir que no es bueno para gaming? Depende, en entornos más casuales cumple con su propósito, pero para prácticas de nivel profesional hay alternativas mejores (Aunque tenga que sacrificarse el tamaño).

Desde el principio lo que me generaba más inseguridad respecto a este televisor era la ausencia de la certificación de Google, algo que significa que a pesar de contar con una versión relativamente reciente de Android TV, carece de un soporte universal... en otras palabras, si Magnavox no mantiene este televisor actualizado podría quedar desafado rápidamente, y la estabilidad del OS podría no ser tan buena.

Irónicamente, esto implica varias ventajas y desventajas, considerando que la falta de certificación permite que tengamos más opciones de personalización desde que iniciamos el aparato por primera vez (De hecho, el 50MEZ572M1 incluye dos app store de terceros que no están vinculadas a Google Play, aparte del mismísimo Google play), pero también complica un poco todo el asunto de las actualizaciones y la corrección de bugs que estás aplicaciones puedan presentar, por ejemplo, he siempre he tenido problemas para hacer funcionar correctamente cualquier versión de Amazon Prime.

En mi experiencia, por otro lado, la certificación de Google tampoco es una garantía de fiabilidad, sufriendo mucho en televisores con procesadores de rendimiento bajo que simplemente no soportan su interface.

Escoge tu veneno, supongo.

Al final la mayoría de los problemas se pueden esquivar, y de igual forma me he acostumbrado a la interface alternativa con la que cuenta este SmarTV... aparte, siempre se puede exaltar la experiencia con Apps como MHShare que permiten duplicar pantalla y transmitir contenido como si se tratara de un Chromecast ordinario.

La mayoría de las aplicaciones son idénticas a lo que veremos en cualquier otro Android/Google TV, así que bueno, luego de un par de meses sigo pensando que fue una compra excelente.
