Windows AI machines all hype...?
So I noticed Windows has started pushing it's new 'AI computers' claiming that we are entering a 'new AI era' of computing....
However on closer investigation there's nothing really new about these machines, they've kind of retrofitted the marketing around gradual developments that have been taking place over the last several years.
The only difference with a Windows AI machine is that it has a Neural Processing Unit, and just like an AI machine makes it sound like it's an entirely new beast, the same is true of an NPU.... it may be called Neural, but it's basically just faster, and algorithmically less accurate to allow it to be faster.
The 'new' stuff Windows AI machines do include:
- Live translation on video calls - fair enough I've yet to see this embedded in any machines, but you could see it coming a mile off.
- Better video tools during video calls, again, same old, just better.
- Enhanced ability to recall what you've been working on already - defo not new, not at all
And somehow all of this is supposed to help us be more productive, well fair enough the translation maybe, but I don't work with people abroad so this is of no use to me anyways.
I can imagine the default will be VERY annoying....
I can just imagine the experience of buying one of these machines.... every five minutes you're getting stupid suggestions about features to try out or tweaks you could make, and you'll be so fucking annoyed by all of the useless ideas put your way that you'll have to spend an hour on forums figuring out how to disable everything.
If you can, you know Windows!
I imagine AI assisted writing is going to be default, which is going to be VERY irritating if you've got decent grammar already.
This has recently been imposed on the WordPress back end and now all of my posts have squiggles telling me I shouldn't be using 'uncertain words', when actually I bloody well should be because nothing is certain in sociology!
That presumption that we shouldn't be expressing caution in writing is actually quite offensive. And it's probably going to be inbuilt into every new Windows machine, I can just feel it!
Final thoughts...
Christ this shit is coming though, isn't it, and just imagine all the extra data harvesting that's going to be done too.
I really should get used to a Linux machine!

I am definitely thinking I need to go Linux on my next computer.

I've avoided Windows for years. It just got annoying and I prefer open source.
Sounds like a good idea to me too!

Lots of companies are pushing 'AI'. I expect it will be useful in some areas, but we don't want it taking over from actual human interaction. Imagine a couple of AI bots sending messages back and forth that no person sees! Google Meet does real time subtitles and can translate I think.
I see a lot of people who say it's 'all bollocks', but it is just a form of technology. At work we have access to a ChatGPT-like tool that does quite well on answering technical questions. They needed something that would not expose company data to the outside.
Both aren't new they've been around for years. Chat GPT is just an extension of a search engine plus a very advanced sentence generator!
I use Windows only because it is the only thing my family knows how to use. But, honestly, this sounds horrible. I don't think live translation will be any better than AI writing, given all of the poor suggestions AI writing provides. I can only imagine the mistranslations that would occur. We'd end up offending or confusing someone.
Should make for lots of amusing popular news articles! But Linux here we come maybe!
