  1. The Value of Intermediation in the Stock Market - In the Abstract for this 55 page paper, Harvard Professors of Business Administration, Marco Di Maggio and Mark L. Egan, along with coauthor Francesco Franzoni from the USI Institute of Finance, describe their work creating a model to describe factors that influence investors' broker choices, and using it to analyze 300 million institutional trades. This work suggests that demand is relatively inelastic with respect to changes in commissions, and that investors will pay premium prices for access to top research-analysts and order flow information. Other factors that influence investor decisions include location - investors are more likely to trade with closer brokers, and reputation - they're less likely to trade with brokers with past records of misbehavior. The work also found differences between hedge funds and typical investors, and determined that institutional investors could underreport management fees by as much as 15% after bundling execution and research.

  2. Mystery 94K BTC Transaction Becomes Richest Non-Exchange Address - Imagine being the person who has to hit the "send" button on a $1 billion transaction...

  3. Influencers are fighting for attention as Instagram tests removing likes from its platform: 'There’s no audience applause at the end of a performance' - In order to protect the mental health of instagram's users, the company is testing the removal of likes. (Previously mentioned in Curating the Internet: Business, leadership, and management micro-summaries for September 4, 2019.) Early feedback seems to indicate that regular users feel less pressure and like the change, but influencers are worried about losing brand deals, loss of engagement, lower algorithmic ranking, and constrained growth.

  4. After YouTube’s $170 million fine for allegedly collecting children’s data, read this before allowing your kids to go online - Youtube's $170 million fine is for alleged violations of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). This legislation specifies that sites targeted towards kids who are under 13 must, "have a privacy policy that 'clearly and comprehensively describes how personal information collected online from kids under 13 is handled'". For this reason, Youtube is stopping all tracking and personalized ads for videos that target young kids.

  5. STEEM Energy supernetwork: Putin approves Russia’s new gas pipeline megaproject to China via Mongolia - In 2018, Russia, China and Mongolia agreed to establish an economic trade corridor. Now, Mongolia has proposed a mega-project to build a gas pipeline from Russia, through Mongolia, to China. Chinese President Xi Jinping has promised to study the project.
