New Rule for OTPs from banks coming this September

Hello and Namaste Everyone

OTP also known as the one-time password is a crucial code that we often receive from banks and other financial institutions. This is a method that has been adopted by these institutions and is currently in place to ensure that access is given to the right owners. It means a second layer of authentication that will be provided by the authorized user only however there have been multiple ways through which users are facing fraudulent activities. There are so many ways that scammers follow for their fraudulent activity is through what they scam people. There is surely a need to go through a new solution which is more safe and better.

TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) has issued another set of rules for OTP and this way it's expected that we will see a reduction in OTP fraud. With the new rule set every message will be scanned if the relevant information is shared by the institution or not and it will also ensure that in case of OTP, there is no link provided on the text message. Generally, scammers try to send the OTP with a fishing link which creates a lot of problems. Every bank and financial institution has to be registered with the government authority according to the new rule and the 1st of September is the deadline to make the changes in the OTP system. It means we are just a couple of days away from the implementation of new rules and in the new rules there might be a slight delay in OTP receiving but it is better.

Set to come into effect from September 1, the new rules mandate institutions such as banks and app-based services to register themselves and whitelist their numbers by August 31 to send one-time passwords (OTPs). The new system in place would also scan messages for any suspicious links, eventually delaying the delivery of OTPs to users.

It's good to see that there are majors followed by the government authorities to ensure that the OTP mechanism is even better and helps people to safeguard their account access and their funds. It's highly required this time when we are highly dependent upon the OTP because it is required to perform transactions on the bank and many other financial institutions. Even if we are using the crypto then also we get the OTP from crypto exchanges and hopefully, these exchanges will also be compliant with the new set of rules.

We should never click on the links that we are not sure of because clicking on these links gives access to our devices to scammers and that is how they try to withdraw the funds. The deadline for this rule implementation is the 1st of September in any case so hopefully from next month onwards we can see more reduction in OTP-based scamming activities.

Technology is there for our betterment but some bad actors use it for wrong purposes and they target innocent people. Instead of using their time and energy on the wrong activities if they utilize it for the betterment then they can surely make a good amount of money and this contribution will also make things better but unfortunately, they are doing things differently. We just can't control them but at least we need to be sure that we are not doing anything wrong that may cause us financial losses and that is where we need to be much careful about it.

Thank you so much
Stay Safe
