The US startup TAU Robotics launched a pilot program allowing customers to hire a humanoid robot for household chores at a rate of around $30 per hour; however, just as this technology began reaching homes, an unexpected obstacle arose: geopolitics. Instead of developing a completely new robot, the company adapted existing humanoid platforms from China to perform everyday tasks, bringing physical intelligence to the consumer market.

Despite their autonomous appearance, the technology still operates in a hybrid mode; this means the robots perform various tasks automatically but remain under human supervision to handle unexpected situations. Operators can take remote control whenever the system encounters an unfamiliar object or a task requiring greater precision.

This combination of artificial intelligence and human oversight enables robots to operate in environments far more unpredictable than a factory. At the same time, the use of cameras inside homes inevitably raises privacy concerns. The company pledges to use encryption and anonymization mechanisms to protect customer data, yet this issue remains one of the biggest hurdles to the acceptance of this type of service.

Interestingly, TAU Robotics' main challenge does not lie with the robots themselves—since much of the platform relies on hardware manufactured by China’s Unitree—but rather with new U.S. regulatory restrictions on foreign-made robotic equipment. These rules could hinder the import and expansion of such platforms in the U.S. market, forcing startups like TAU to seek domestic alternatives to continue growing without relying on components subject to future government restrictions.
