It is possible to talk to animals equipped with artificial intelligence.

With AI

My friends, the limits are being broken week after week and now an artificial intelligence is learning to speak dolphins, that's right, Google Deep Mind together with researchers from the Wild Dolphin Project created DolphinGemma, the first large language model trained to understand the complex sounds of dolphins and their natural habitat, yes the AI is beginning to decipher the language of these hyperintelligent marine beings and what it is revealing can change everything we know about communication between species.

For more than 40 years, Dr. Denise Herzing and her team have recorded, analyzed and cataloged the sounds of dolphins in the Atlantic, now DolphinGemma based on the same technological foundations as Google's Gemma models is being trained with this acoustic library, capturing patterns of pours, clicks and pulsed sounds that not even the most experienced humans could identify.

The model transforms sounds into tokens, analyzes complete sequences and looks for structures and repetitions that may be the key to understanding dolphin language, this AI is just part of a much larger system; Since 2010, researchers have been developing wearable devices called cetacean hearing and telemetry chets, which enable two-way underwater communication between humans and dolphins.

These systems detect the sounds made by animals, associate them with objects or actions and allow the researcher to respond with artificial sounds and with AI in control this communication becomes faster, more natural and more efficient, something unthinkable just a few years ago.

The DolphinGemma model is capable of predicting meanings and intentions of dolphins based on behavioral and contextual acoustic data using Google Pixel equipment. Researchers now have a more portable and intelligent system, capable of suggesting in real time what toy or object the dolphin is asking for and reinforcing that behavior as a true dialogue.

This model will not be exclusive, Google promised to release DolphinGemma to the public by mid-year, allowing other scientific teams around the world to adapt for other species of dolphins and even different cetaceans, and understanding dolphin language can open doors to incredible discoveries about animal intelligence, marine culture and interspecies communication.

If one day we really manage to have a literal conversation with dolphins, what will they want to tell us? I don't know, could it be that they have legends, stories or even opinions about the ocean that we couldn't even imagine.

If we could talk to them, what would you ask them first?

Sorry for my Ingles, it's not my main language.

No doubt we are breaking boundaries in the science world especially with Artificial Intelligence. It might look vague for now but the possibilities of talking to animals is high in the near future and if we can talk to them soon, one question I will ask is how are they feeling because we treat animals based on what is believe is good for them and not what they actually tell us is good for them.
