To modify or heal the human body.
However, there is a significant distinction between treating a disease and altering a human trait; it is precisely at this boundary that genetic engineering begins to raise much broader questions. Researchers are currently exploring strategies to correct mutations linked to hereditary diseases, modify immune system cells, and stimulate tissue repair mechanisms.
In the field of regenerative medicine, for instance, scientists are investigating ways to control the molecular signals that guide cell growth and recovery. Certain animals, such as salamanders, are capable of regenerating entire limbs. Humans possess far more limited repair mechanisms; understanding these differences could aid in the development of new therapies, even though we remain a long way from being able to regenerate a human arm or leg.

Traits like intelligence, strength, and longevity depend on complex interactions between countless genes, the environment, and biological development. There is no simple "genetic switch" capable of transforming a person into a superior version of themselves; furthermore, modifying a gene to achieve a specific benefit can trigger unexpected consequences for other bodily functions. This is why genetic engineering, when applied to human enhancement, remains far more limited than some predictions suggest.
The direction of this research marks a significant shift. For decades, the primary focus of genetic medicine was to understand and correct the abnormalities responsible for disease. Now, with artificial intelligence assisting in the discovery and design of biological mechanisms, we are beginning to discuss possibilities that go beyond the restoration of health. As technology moves from asking only how to heal the human body to exploring how we might modify it, a new question arises: who will decide how far we can go?
