EngineAI's multipurpose humanoid robot




The humanoid robot industry is beginning to diverge into distinct paths, and few companies illustrate this as clearly as China’s EngineAI; within just a few days, the company unveiled two completely different applications for its T800 humanoid robot. In one, it is shown working inside a factory, while in the other, it is seen battling other robots in a ring in the United States.


The first demonstration took place at a Luxshare-ICT factory in Suzhou, China. EngineAI released a video showing several T800 robots performing various industrial tasks within the facility. According to the video, the robots can receive work orders directly from an MIS (Management Information System) used to manage production processes; vision systems then identify the type and quantity of materials requiring handling. The robots use their arms to grasp and position these objects; the demonstration also shows the T800 transporting a load with a single arm, dynamically navigating around obstacles, and executing full-body movements to position containers stably.


The choice of Luxshare for this demonstration is significant. The company is a major Chinese electronics manufacturer and an Apple supplier. The presence of the T800 within one of its facilities highlights the manufacturer's intent to transition the robot from demonstrations to industrial applications, though the video also raises some questions. The presentation is highly produced and edited; while EngineAI maintains on-screen indicators stating that the scenes were filmed on-site, this follows earlier demonstrations by the company that sparked doubts regarding the potential use of computer-generated imagery.




On that occasion, EngineAI even released behind-the-scenes footage to demonstrate that the T800's movements were genuine; however, the editing of the new demonstration makes it difficult to determine the extent to which the robot can autonomously perform these tasks when facing unplanned situations—a contrast that becomes even more striking when considering events from just a few days earlier. On August 15, the T800 made its physical debut in the United States at the RCT, a humanoid robot combat event held in San Francisco; in that instance, the T800 units were operated by human pilots and pitted against one another in matches broadcast online.


The tournament concluded with a victory for Japanese pilot Hiroyuki Oxonic; these two applications are part of a strategy EngineAI is developing for the robot. According to the company, the physical demands of combat serve to test characteristics such as structural durability, dynamic balance, and joint torque. The T800 has an announced starting price of approximately $25,000, and the company states it is working toward a production capacity in the range of tens of thousands of units.
