Squash bugs
This morning, I explored a local resident's cucumber patch located not far from my home. Upon spotting the owner in the garden, I approached and asked for permission to enter the area. He readily agreed and was even pleased to see me photographing the insects found there. The patch was teeming with insects, all busily inspecting the cucumber blossoms. Most of them were tiny and difficult to approach, constantly flitting from one flower to the next.
Among the many insects present, only the squash bug was somewhat larger. Unlike the others, this squash bug didn't fly away when I got close; instead, it strolled leisurely, looking for a place to hide. Its long legs allowed it to take wide strides as it kept moving. Strangely, however, whenever I stopped following, it would turn back toward its starting point. Photographing it felt like a game of hide-and-seek. Yet, I didn't mind; it actually amused me. Perhaps it was doing that on purpose just to entertain me.
Squash bugs are major pests for squash and cucumber plants. They attack young leaves, tender stems, flowers, and developing fruit—consuming the leaves and flowers while sucking the sap from the stems and young fruit. A heavy infestation can be fatal to the plants, leading to crop failure. In the garden I explored, however, there were very few squash bugs—only a handful. I noticed no damage to the cucumber plants; the leaves, tender stems, flowers, and fruit were all in perfect condition, completely unblemished.
