Fly of the genus miltogramma

Not all creatures we deem repulsive actually bring harm take, for instance, this insect I encountered. It plays a role in maintaining the natural ecosystem, even though its presence often goes unnoticed. The insect I found is a fly from the genus Miltogramma, better known as a food thief that targets the nests of solitary bees and wasps. I spotted it performing a dance atop a blade of grass; it moved its hind legs with such agility, resembling a seasoned professional dancer. The dew nearby hinted at the freshness of the morning air.

As I mentioned earlier, despite looking stunning on the camera screen, this fly is often looked down upon and dismissed as a mere nuisance. Yet, to us nature observers, it is a sought-after subject. Its body is beautiful, featuring a striking blend of black and gray, while its large red eyes lend it an air of elegance. Those eyes serve a purpose beyond mere aesthetics; they are capable of detecting movement with incredible speed, making the fly notoriously difficult for predators to catch.

Just yesterday, I was waiting somewhere for the rain to stop, and my gaze fell on a similar-looking fly. I couldn't take a picture because I didn't have my camera with me. As always, great work!
