Eumerus figurans fly
On a fresh blade of grass, a tiny insect was resting quietly. It appeared to be resting, perhaps having just completed a long journey, flitting from one leaf to the next. At first, I thought it was a bee. After a closer look, I realized it wasn't.
The insect had short, rounded antennae, and only one pair of wings. From these two characteristics, we can tell it wasn't a bee, but rather a fly from the Syrphidae family. In Latin, this fly is known as Eumerus figurans. It is one of the luckiest fly species in the world. Its costume is unpopular with predators.
When people think of fly, they often imagine insects that like to visit dirty places like garbage, carcasses, gutters, and so on. But this particular fly is very different. It doesn't like dirty places. In fact, it loves clean places. It spends most of its time in fresh grass. It also enjoys small flowers that grow in the wild.
