Bean bug | riptortus linearis

As usual, when the sun begins to shine, I always take a moment to walk in nature. There are many things to enjoy in the great outdoors, one of which is insects. These tiny creatures are often overlooked or even considered a nuisance. Well, this time, I managed to find a bean bug relaxing on a fresh green leaf. Seeing it so relaxed, I approached it cautiously so as not to scare it and leave me alone.

This insect is known in Latin as Riptortus linearis, a true bug species from the Alydidae family. This insect is known as a major pest of bean crops. I found this insect not far from a local farmer's long bean plantation. This insect attacks bean plants by piercing the pods and sucking the sap from the beans. Beans that have been sucked out of the sap will shrivel, fail to develop properly, or may even fall off before harvest.
