Science fiction, more than a genre to entertain

Have you ever thought about what life was like 100 years ago? When something as crazy as having a real-time conversation with your loved ones miles of miles away was simply… "impossible".

For us, who are used to Smartphones and the internet, this is nothing more than something that is part of our day to day, because currently doing this is something as simple as opening a messaging application, choosing a contact and pressing the button call.
Now imagine that it is April 1912 and a lady is having breakfast while holding the newspaper, until she reads the terrible headline "The Titanic sank, there are hundreds of victims" then she remembers through tears that her son, making use of his own savings, he went on that ship on a trip, looking for better life opportunities.

What would be the first thing this mother would want to do? Most likely, the first thing she would like to do is find out if her son is okay, if she was one of the victims of the accident. But, due to the technological conditions of the time, she at least would have to wait a couple of days to receive a message about her son, enduring the uncertainty and sadness of not knowing if her son is alright. It really would be a terrible agony, right?

But there is good news, the son of this lady lied to her about what he was going to do with the money he had saved, and instead of going on the Titanic, he is happy with his friends at a party, in a nearby city. When this man reads the terrible headline of a newspaper, he immediately realizes how worried his mother must be, so he decides to go home that same day, although of course, the return trip will take a few hours. ...

So what if at that time there were mobile devices that allowed you to make calls and be able to talk to people thousands of miles away? Many people of the time probably never asked themselves this question, because given their lifestyle, these types of questions never crossed their minds. This is where science fiction comes in.

The power of science fiction

Within science fiction we can find different ideas or concepts that despite existing within an imaginary framework, have a scientific part, which sometimes allows us to predict technological advances in the real world and how people interact with them. An example of this are the works Metropolis of 1927, and 2001: A Space Odyssey of 1968. Well, both works exposed us to the concept of video calls, dozens of years before it was possible.

That is precisely what I love about science fiction, the fact that this genre gives us the possibility to stimulate our imagination towards different possibilities that can become reality, offering us concepts that go beyond our daily lives. And why not? It may even stimulate the imagination of a scientist who can bring these concepts to life.

Terminator 2, the concept of a negative future

Source

The film is set in 1995, where the android T-1000, sent from the future by Skynet to kill Jonh Connor, confronts the android T-800, sent by humanity in an attempt to protect John. It so happens that this ten-year-old boy will, in the future, become the leader of the human resistance in the war against Skynet, which is why the T-1000 has been dispatched to eliminate John before he gets out. become a threat.

I really like this film, mainly because the science fiction that is observed in this installment, exposes us a negative scenario, which is why we have the possibility of seeing the errors, so we can be more careful and avoid a negative development in fields such as Artificial Intelligence, for example, which is already a very important field today, since it is part of our day to day.

Considering the mission of the T-800, it is under the command of John, who initially uses the android for his own amusement. This is a scene that I really enjoyed when I saw it for the first time as a child, because at that moment when I saw an android like the T-800 that comes from the future that also has super strength being controlled by a child, it was something that seemed very entertaining. , since it was like some kind of very robust robot that I could handle however I wanted.

Spoiler alert!!

Years later I saw that movie again in my teens, and honestly there were some scenes that shocked me a lot, one of them is the final scene, where the T-800 mentions the phrase “Now I know why you cry. But it is something that I will never be able to do ”because after having spent so much with the protagonists, he manages to understand human feelings, as well as one of the first expressions we use, crying. This scene is really surprising, because we can see the great development that the character has had during the movie, where at the beginning he is a machine with only one objective and at the end he has advanced so much that he can understand at least a part of human feelings.

Personally I am very intrigued to know about IA topic in the future, I consider this movie as the beginning of my love for AI, because for me the fact that the machines in the film can develop those abilities so typical of the human being is something that changed my way of thinking about the capabilities that a machine can have. I wonder if at some point this field will advance so far that I can see a machine that can understand human feelings.

Avatar, space exploration and critique of human behavior

Source

Avatar, the highest grossing film in history, its position as the highest grossing film was surpassed by Avengers: End Game, but thanks to a new premiere in Asia, it returned to the throne. In Avatar we can observe many futuristic technological advances applied to different areas, including space exploration, where the people who travel in the ship go into a kind of coma, thus making travel time more bearable, an idea that makes a lot of sense. Apply in a somewhat distant future, since the space that separates the stars is usually immense, but it does not end there. In Avatar we are shown an entire alien ecosystem full of peculiar shapes, which is being affected by human mining.

In the film, the conflict over resources between humans and aliens becomes the central point of the story, which can be directly compared to what we currently do on planet Earth, since in most cases we prioritize our own activity without taking into account the flora and nature. Something that is already beginning to change with the different organizations that are dedicated to the care and preservation of wildlife, as well as the initiative that governments and individuals are beginning to take in favor of wildlife conservation. In the following video you can see different methods that have been built so that animals can go from one side of the road to the other. A very interesting and positive initiative.

I found this movie very beautiful, seeing the different forms of life that are shown in the movie and how they interact with each other is something that moved me a lot, and this is something that we live here, on earth, for example, bees and plants. Bees are one of the main pollinators that exist, this work is very important because this is how plants reproduce, so basically thanks to bees it is possible that many plants continue to multiply. I think this movie increased my interest in nature, something a bit ironic since the main living things you see in the movie are not from this planet.

Conclusion

In conclusion, science fiction is a very broad genre, in which you can find very interesting concepts, which can be negative or positive, and that is good, because from negative concepts we can learn to avoid these errors, and from positive concepts. it can inspire us to create new solutions. In addition, within this genre, unusual situations can be appreciated, which allow us to increase our curiosity about the unknown as well as allow us to discover passions that we did not know we had.

This is my entry to the OCD contest, and I must say that I really liked the initiative. I hope you enjoyed reading my post as much as I had fun writing it.
