AI vs. CS: Decoding the Degrees of the Future

Introduction

“Computer Science” is generally spread as a major that attracts many university students, but the high demand for jobs related to the field of “Artificial Intelligence” has created a growing list of colleges and universities that offer study programs dedicated to this field.

These programs go beyond the basics of computer science; to address topics such as “machine learning”, “computing algorithms”, “data analytics” and “advanced robotics”.

The emergence of degree programs for artificial intelligence comes in light of companies' need for distinguished talent in this rapidly developing field.Because of the increase in companies’ need to talented employees in this rapidly developing field we can clearly see the emergence of degree programs for artificial intelligence coming in light.

However, there is some skepticism about the applicability of an AI degree, because of the quick changes in the technology. But some say that as long as the program is involved in computer science and other basics, a focus on artificial intelligence can provide an advantage in building a suitable personality for work.

It’s clear that those who want to learn about AI should look for a program that teaches basic information, such as computer science, statistics, mathematics, and engineering concepts, that lay the foundation for a career in AI. These basic foundations do not change, even as the underlying technology changes. Some would-be learners may wonder whether they need an AI degree at all, given how quickly the market is changing and the fact that more employers are willing to hire workers without college degrees if they have the right skills the job requires.

It is important to note that the majority of companies require university degrees, and a degree is still required for the “highest paying jobs” in technology fields, and this includes software engineers.

Although possessing a certificate will not make a person fully qualified, but this is still one of the first things that an employer will look at and not having this (certification) may lead to immediate exclusion.

Artificial Intelligence vs. Computer Science

It is important for students to think critically about the curriculum of their desired program and how it differs from the mainstream computer science curriculum, the availability in the career path and its economic outcomes.

It is also important that students think carefully about what they want. If they are looking for a program that provides exposure to AI or they want a technical program that provides core content and courses on this technology?

Moreover, they ultimately want the relevant skills and knowledge that will get them into the job market now, or whether they want a broader degree that will be the basis for long-term advancement.

Conclusion

Some employers may look more favorably at an AI degree versus a simple computer science degree, but no one really knows right now what an AI degree will be worth in a few years.

Given the uncertainty, it is possible that students would not go wrong if they chose to pursue a traditional computer science or artificial intelligence degree, as long as they learn all the basics.

However, those who take the first step should take classes related to artificial intelligence and data science, which can really open a new way for future employment.
