AI: The New Olympic Scout

Introduction

Intel is NOW testing a new AI-based system to identify
athletic talent that could compete in the Olympics and compete for gold medals
in the future. And this what we can call an important improvement in the world
of sports.
The system’s developers aim to use a mobile version of
the technology to bring advanced sports science to more regions around the
world, and that no one will be deprived from his right to be represented in the
sports games and the Olympics.

A series of experiments has begun, with a number of
children and young people from Japan participating in a round of AI-based tests
that include running, jumping, and measuring grip strength. Data from these
activities is collected and analyzed to assess the participants’ strength,
speed, endurance, reaction time, and agility, and the results are then compared
with data from professional athletes and Olympic champions.
The test results showed that one participant is a
potential candidate to become a runner, despite his preferences for soccer and
tennis.

The system uses computer vision and historical data to
enable people to compare themselves to elite athletes, and determine which
sport suits them best. After completing the tests, each participant receives a
recommendation for the sport that best suits their abilities from a list of
sports, according to the Olympic program specified by the company working on
this project.

Interestingly, the system, which the fans at the Paris
2024 Olympics can try out, has a smaller, more portable version that can be run
on most devices equipped with a simple camera and some computing power.

In addition, this technology can evaluate people’s
performance by analyzing video captured by the camera without the need for
physical sensors.

Recently, the International Olympic Committee used this
system in Senegal, where more than 1,000 children in 5 different villages were
evaluated, and 48 children were identified with outstanding athletic abilities,
including one child who was classified as an exceptional case. These children
were offered to join sports programs to see how much they can develop their
athletic abilities.

Conclusion

It is well known that discovering talent at an early age
is an ideal goal. But it is also possible that this system, which measures only
some characteristics, may be limited in sports that require high technical
skills or endurance, such as football or marathon running.

But of course, this system remains useful for assessing
potential athletes in areas that lack advanced assessment methods, but it must
be integrated into a comprehensive talent discovery system.

So overall this Artificial intelligence system once
applied on a wide range for sure will make difference and will allow us to see
some extraordinary talents that really deserve to show in the Sports events and
not the ones that came to the sports world just because there’s lack in the
players.
In addition that we will be able to see again some
talents that we used to watch since we were little kids and this will improve
the sports all over the world and that what we are in need to.
