Yeah sarcopenia! Sarcopenia is a physical condition that we all experience or will experience naturally as we age. It is due to multiple and diverse factors. But primarily and above all, due to age, a sedentary lifestyle and a lack of proper physical exercise resulting in a progressive loss of muscle mass, strength and function. However, and very importantly too, it can also be due to our diet and the type and quality of the nutrients we consume.
The word sarcopenia is derived from Greek and means scarcity (penia) of flesh (sarx). A natural syndrome and physical condition that in some cases is also defined as Kratopenia, Myopenia and Dynapenia in terms of its severity. So in summary, we could differentiate them in the following way:
The concept of Sarcopenia refers exclusively to loss of skeletal muscle, not including the other three types of muscle tissue: smooth muscle, myocardium and myoepithelium of certain glands.
Subsequently Kratopenia, defined as a deficit of muscle power due to loss of muscle contraction capacity measured by dynamometry or isotonic contraction tests.
Then Myopenia, as a new universal term for muscle wasting and more specifically to indicate the presence of clinically relevant loss of mass muscle due to any illness and at any age.
And last Dynapenia, as the decrease in strength, in addition to the loss of muscle mass, as well as its relationship with the loss of physical function, mortality, quality of life and disability.

— Okay, but then... ¿Is there such a thing as Mental Sarcopenia?
— Oh yeah, of course there is! While "mental sarcopenia" is not a formal medical diagnosis, the term is used to describe the strong and complex link between age-related muscle loss (sarcopenia) and mental health decline. Particularly depression and cognitive impairment.
By instance, recent studies suggest a close connection between sarcopenia and cognitive decline, including issues with memory, attention and processing speed. Since Sarcopenia actually is associated with an increased risk of cognitive impairment and neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.
— Hmmm, interesting. But could you please provide us a clearer example a bit more visual and illustrative about the relationship between Sarcopenia and Mental Health?
— Of course, no problem. You just ask and I'll provide. Simply watch this video here below and then tell me if it was visual & illustrative enough.
— Gee! that indeed was visual and illustrative enough. Now, what can you tell us about sarcopenia and its connection to our consuming habits and the quality of the nutrients in our daily diet?
— Oh! I'm glad you asked. To start, just look closely at the following image. And then I'll continue to further illustrate what you've seen so far in relation to sarcopenia and its close connection to mental health.

— Uhm... well yeah. I guess I get you, but am still not totally sure about what you are exactly meaning on its relationship. Could you be more specific if you don't mind?
— ¡Hell yeah! don't worry. That I'll clarify it for you right now if you have the patience. Do you really have the patience and willingness to understand what I mean?
— Oh! well, I suppose I do. Especially after you've already piqued my curiosity. Go ahead, please!
— Fantastic! Now pay more attention. Because from now on, we'll get directly down to business and will get a little bit more technical. Pay close attention please!

As you can see, our brain is the organ in our body that receives the most chemical nourishment from our muscular activity. And aside from the fact that the heart is actually also considered a muscle, I'm willing to argue that our brain isn't. You see?
Therefore, in my opinion, our brain is the main muscle that most needs to be chemically nourished by our daily activities. Constantly exercising it with the nutrients derived from our mental activity as thinking, deliberating, discerning and reflecting.
In other words, mechanically our body muscles basically provides the necessary chemical fuel our brain needs to be processed and convert all of this into more or less muscle to maintain a vital chemical balance. A vital chemical balance that we only achieve if we feed our brain with something always interesting to think about.
Because in the end, the human body indeed is nothing more than a mere machine that feeds and nourishes itself with a lot of hormones that transport an even greater amount of chemicals that must be separated, dissected, diluted, processed and distributed by our brain to the rest of the body so that it continues to function like a well-oiled engine. And believe it or not, it is our brain the main muscle in charge of this.
As you may have noticed, this previous video fundamentally focuses and concentrates mainly on the physical aspect of our body in relation to a proper nutrition to conserve and maintain our health. But... what about conserve and maintain a sounding mental health?
And yeah, it is quite right here where I insist on paying more attention to what I have written and I've already described in the previous paragraphs before the video.
Our brain muscles can't afford to consume junk food all the time. ¡No! not in the least. Because for the fundamental and necessary chemicals we've been talking about to be generated, it's essential that we consume stuff with the actual nutrients that truly makes us think, process and reflect to keep the body machine in constant movement and going.
Because otherwise, we will never are going to build the ultimate muscle of consciousness. Which in my opinion, it always is gonna be the most important and indispensable muscle for keeping our body machine functioning healthily in full throttle. I really hope this has been a satisfying and comprehensive enough explanation to clear up all your doubts about what Mental Sarcopenia is. So, see you in a next installment!
