Kareishū: ¡Your 2-nonenal level! ...it's my MeMe #256

The sense of smell enriches your experience of the world around you. Different aromas can change your mood, transport you to a distant memory, and even help you bond with loved ones. The ability to smell also plays a key role in your health. If your sense of smell diminishes, it could affect your diet and nutrition, your physical well-being and sexual attractiveness, and even your confidence in everyday life.

It is estimated that the number of odors a person can detect ranges from 10 billion to 100 billion, or even more. Our noses contain different combinations of odor-detecting cells, so each person has a very different sensitivity to smells. In fact, when you and I smell the same physical thing, our perceptions could be very different.

2-Nonenal is a chemical compound (unsaturated aldehyde) which is responsible for the characteristic "old person smell" which is produced by the oxidation of omega-7 fatty acids in the skin. Its production naturally increases from an age of 30-40 years old due to skin aging, changes in sebum and a reduction in antioxidants in the body, resulting in an aroma usually described as greasy, herbaceous, or like damp cardboard.

  • Why does it occur? It originates when lipids on the skin's surface degrade oxidatively, with their production increasing with age. It's a natural process and not directly linked to poor hygiene.

  • Odor characteristics: Often described as a mixture of grass, grease, rancidity, or even cucumber. It's a subtle and not necessarily unpleasant aroma, scientifically known as kareishu in Japanese.

  • How can it be reduced?

  1. Hygiene: Regular bathing with mild soaps that remove accumulated oil.

  2. Diet: Increasing the consumption of antioxidants (vitamins C and E, omega-3) to slow down oxidation.

  3. Lifestyle: Keeping skin hydrated, exercising, and changing clothes frequently.

Although often associated with aging, 2-nonenal is a byproduct of normal skin metabolism. Often more noticeable after age 60, but which begins to form much earlier. The value of a "mushroom-rich diet" is also highlighted as an effective strategy for preventing skin odor in old age.

This is because mushrooms contain two key compounds: ergothioneine, a potent antioxidant with anti-inflammatory properties that blocks lipid peroxidation before odor accumulates and spermidine, a compound that activates autophagy which is the cellular process by which damaged components are eliminated and recycled. This cellular renewal not only helps maintain healthier skin but also contributes to slowing down aging and reducing Kareishū or "old-age smell."

«The Smell Of Gaining Years»

Since olfactory information is sent to different parts of the brain, smells can influence positively many aspects of our lives, such as memories, mood, emotions, and our sexual drive. For thousands of years, aromatic plants have been used in the healing practices of many cultures, including ancient China, India, and Egypt.

Aromatherapy, for example, seeks to use essential oils from flowers, herbs, or trees to improve emotional and physical well-being. Improvements that can be further enhanced with the use of music.

To date, there is little scientific evidence to support the effectiveness of aromatherapy for many health problems. However, memories of a scent can be vivid and long-lasting, which could have a positive effect, especially when enhanced by music.

It is said that with age, the nose's ability to smell diminishes to some extent, but apparently much more declines our brain's capacity to recognize odors. The main reason appears to be that the functioning of the brain regions involved in smell and memory deteriorates as we age. And today, being TechnoFriday, we're going to verify if that's true. So now, time to sweat a little and live the experience in our own skin. ¡Enjoy!

Like the music; Love the vid! 🎶🥳
Shall manage my odour thingy with more care. Getting into the category of old age, at least for the youngsters around us.
Perhaps we shall go with a Japanese diet; They respect old people; perhaps because they smell respectful? 🙏😆

Hahaha yes, I imagined it would be like that and that's why I shared it especially for you.

Nah, I don't think that'll be necessary. It's better to let them get used to the smell of experience and wisdom.

Oh yeah, the idea of incorporating a Japanese diet into our usual one always sounds interesting. And of course, they respect older people because they already know what the aroma of experience, patience and wisdom smells like.
