New MG5 Review | The Perfect Estate Car?...and yes it's Electric
We love MG cars! Not only were they one of the first manufacturers to take a chance on us when we began our YouTube Channel, they have continued to be supportive. That means that when we get one of their cars on review, we go all out and plan one heck of a road trip (or in our case, several road trips)
So why not join us we take a closer look at the only fully electric estate car in the UK!
The MG5 strikes a balance between traditional estate car practicality and modern electric vehicle design. Its unassuming exterior hides a wealth of capabilities, making it a versatile choice for a range of drivers.
At first glance, the MG5’s design is more about function than flash. Its sleek lines and aerodynamic profile are complemented by practical elements such as roof rails and a spacious boot. The front fascia features a modest grille flanked by LED headlights, giving it a contemporary look. While it may not be the most eye-catching EV on the market, its design is practical and efficient, aimed at those who value substance over style.
The side profile of the MG5 reveals its estate car roots, with a long roofline and generous rear overhang providing ample cargo space. The rear design is straightforward, with clean lines and LED taillights enhancing visibility. The overall design is practical, offering easy access to the boot and plenty of space for luggage, groceries, or outdoor gear.
Inside, the MG5 offers a comfortable and well-appointed cabin. The focus is on practicality and comfort, with a range of features designed to enhance the driving experience. It’s equipped with modern technology and high-quality materials. The dashboard is dominated by an 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, which includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for seamless connectivity. The system is intuitive and easy to use, providing access to navigation, music, and hands-free calling.
One of the standout features of the MG5 is its spacious and versatile cabin. The flat floor and clever packaging create a roomy interior, with ample legroom and headroom for both front and rear passengers. The seats are comfortable and supportive, making long journeys more enjoyable. The rear seats can be folded down to expand the already generous boot space, making it ideal for carrying large items or accommodating a family’s needs.
The MG5 is designed to offer a smooth and efficient driving experience, with a focus on practicality and ease of use. One of our road trips took the boys through Wrynose and Coniston during a fierce storm provided the perfect test for its capabilities.
Powered by a 61 kWh battery, delivering a range of up to 250 miles for the SE and up to 235 miles for the Trophy. This range is more than adequate for most daily commutes and short trips, offers a smooth and quiet ride, typical of electric vehicles. The instant torque from the electric motor ensures quick and responsive acceleration, making it easy to navigate through city traffic and overtake on the highway. The low centre of gravity, thanks to the battery placement, enhances stability and handling, providing a confident driving experience even in challenging conditions.
This road trip took the boys through some of the most challenging terrains in the Lake District, including Wrynose Pass and Coniston, during a fierce storm. The winding roads, steep inclines, and adverse weather conditions put the MG5 to the test.
Wrynose Pass is known for its steep gradients and narrow, twisting roads. Despite the challenging conditions, the MG5 handled the pass with ease. The electric motor’s instant torque provided ample power for the steep climbs, while the regenerative braking system offered controlled descents. The precise steering and balanced chassis made navigating the tight corners and narrow sections manageable, even in the pouring rain.
Coniston’s rugged landscape and adverse weather conditions added another layer of difficulty to our journey. The MG5’s stability and traction control systems worked effectively to maintain grip on the wet and slippery roads. The high ground clearance, for an estate car, helped navigate the occasional flood and rough patches without issue. The cabin remained dry and comfortable, with the climate control system ensuring a cozy interior despite the storm raging outside.
One of the key benefits of the MG5 is its efficiency. Even with the additional demands of our road trip, including the steep climbs and heavy rain, the MG5 maintained impressive energy efficiency. The regenerative braking system helped conserve energy, extending the range and reducing the need for frequent charging. With a 150kW rapid charger, it will take just 31 minutes to charge from 10% to 80%, and using a 50kW fast charger, the MG5 can be charged from 10% to 80% in 61 minutes, making it convenient for longer trips. For home charging, a 7kW wall box can charge the battery from 10% to 100% in approximately 10 hours, making it easy to recharge overnight.
Safety is a priority for MG, and the MG5 comes equipped with a comprehensive suite of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). These features enhance safety and provide peace of mind for both the driver and passengers, and includes a range of advanced safety features, such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and automatic emergency braking. These systems work together to enhance safety and help prevent accidents. The vehicle also features a robust build quality designed to protect occupants in the event of a collision.
The high-strength steel frame and strategically placed crumple zones absorb impact forces, while multiple airbags provide additional protection for all passengers. The vehicle also includes advanced safety technologies such as a surround-view monitor and a heads-up display, enhancing visibility and situational awareness.
The road trip through Wrynose and Coniston during a fierce storm has shown that the new MG5 is a practical and capable electric estate car. This vehicle embodies MG’s commitment to providing affordable, efficient, and versatile electric vehicles. With its spacious interior, advanced technology, and impressive performance, the MG5 is a compelling choice for those seeking a practical and reliable electric vehicle.
As we reflect on our experience, it’s clear that the MG5 offers a unique blend of comfort, practicality, and efficiency. Whether you’re a family looking for a spacious and versatile vehicle, or an individual seeking a reliable and affordable electric car, the MG5 delivers on all fronts.
Thank you all, and enjoy!
