Living in the Global Village: The Bright and Dark Sides of Technology
With modern transportation, I can reach another continent in just a few hours. Doesn’t that make our wide world feel like a small village? It does, it truly does. Some of us are even close friends with people who live thousands of miles away:)

The benefits of technology are undeniable, and those of us born in this era are grateful for it. However, I can’t deny that technology has also put many of us in a kind of bondage.
A young American singer& songwriter, Sofia Isella, said in her lyrics, “Turns out all of human knowledge at our fingertips made us dumb.” And I felt it deeply. With social media constantly in our hands, there’s just as much potential for distraction as there is for productivity.
There are days I doomscroll until I hate myself for being so irresponsible. That guilt will linger until I finally get something meaningful done. Have you noticed how easily technology can cause mental and emotional exhaustion, even low self-esteem? It’s a ripple effect.
I won’t even start on how many young people now prefer the virtual world to reality. We make friends online but have no real ones in our schools or neighborhoods. We appear kind and thoughtful on social media, while our real-life neighbors go hungry. We could know every crime and abuse happening in another country, yet be unaware of similar problems right next door. And how about those awkward moments on dates, where one person spends the whole time scrolling through their phone? I won't be totally wrong if I say that technology has the tendency to make us lose our human essence.

With our smartphones, even people without degrees can earn a living, I’m a perfect example of that. Yet, on the flip side, many graduates are unemployed because machines and software have replaced their roles. One person with a computer can now do the work of five people, reducing the need for human labor.
Then there are what I call the dark ones, those who exploit the darker sides of technology. The hackers, fraudsters, and people who use the dark web to commit crimes. So technology has also made it easier for criminals and bullies. With a single careless click on a malicious link, you could lose your data, your money, or even your reputation.
So, I personally believe that technology makes life both easier and more complicated, simultaneously. Its impact depends on how individuals and societies choose to use it.
Despite all its flaws, I still appreciate being born in this era, and I’m sure you do too. We just have to learn, and be smart enough to avoid the negativity that comes with it.
