Periodismo y periodista digital.png

With the birth of new technologies, the world has changed, and so has the practice of many professions. Among them journalism, which, to a large extent, has extrapolated its activity to digital spaces. With this, the journalist has had to reinvent himself, to become something "new", a new type of journalist, whom we call digital journalist. But are all journalists digital journalists? What is this really and what are the essential characteristics of a digital journalist?

The integration of new technologies in daily life has transformed the world in many ways, one of them are the ways in which certain professions are performed today. The clearest example of this, in my opinion, is the rapid growth of work from home supported, of course, in the use of technological equipment, whether it is a desktop computer, laptop or smartphone. Journalism, and therefore the journalist, does not escape from this.

On the contrary, it could be said that this is one of the careers that was mostly affected, for better or worse, by the integration of the aforementioned new technologies, often "forcing" those who practice journalism to transform from journalist to digital journalist. However, is it possible to know for sure what a digital journalist is?

The concept of digital journalist could be taken lightly and believe that it refers to a journalism graduate who created accounts in the "trinity" of today's social networks: Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. He's a journalist, he has a smartphone and he also writes on WhatsApp, so he's a full-fledged digital journalist, right? The short answer is no.

Not by using digital media and being a journalist you will necessarily be the ideal example of a digital journalist. Because a digital journalist is not just that. He or she must have a broad knowledge of the virtues of the Internet and, therefore, it is his or her main environment in the practice of journalism. He knows what are the best sources and, also using the benefits of cyberspace, he will get those sources first hand, if necessary.

The digital journalist is also an excellent content manager. He is not only in the networks, he knows how to use them, understands how to manage social networks and is aware that, in this space, everything changes very fast, so he has to keep updated and also learn quickly.

Understanding that globalization is a fact, the digital journalist must master other languages, this is linked to the need for sources because, sometimes, the information required will not be available in their native language. This is part of the will to investigate, to stay informed and inform others.

The fact that the digital journalist works in cyberspace does not mean that he or she is detached from his or her main job, journalism. Therefore, he/she has to maintain close contact with people through the networks where he/she is present and always be open to debate.

The most accurate is the comment of journalist José Luis Orihuela, who says that these are not new skills of digital journalism. They are the same skills as always, in a way it is the same journalism, adapted, evolving hand in hand with the demands of new technologies.

Digital journalism is the same journalism as always, exercised in a different field than the usual one. In this sense, the digital journalist, handling the above-mentioned characteristics, is also the same professional, with renewed skills.
