[This Day on Math History] Charles-Jean De La Valleé Poussin, One of the 'Fathers of Primer Numbers Theorem' Passes Away (02/03/1964).

One of the Fathers of Prime Numbers Theorem Passes Away.
On this day, 2 March 1964, the Belgian mathematician Charles-Jean De La Valleé Poussin died in Watermael-Boitsfort, Belgium, at the age of 95. He was a mathematician who is recognised worldwide for his important contributions to what would become the theory of numbers and mathematical analysis, where his works would be marked by his great mathematical rigour and abundant clarity in his ideas and mathematical conceptions.
Main Mathematical Contributions.
- Prime Numbers Theorem:
Undoubtedly, his most important contribution to mathematics would be the proof of the Prime Number Theorem, which was a result that had long eluded mathematicians. (We will give a more detailed description of it later). Independently and simultaneously with Jacques Hadamard, he would show that the asymptotic distribution for the prime numbers can be approximated by the function n / ln(n).
The conception of this theorem helped a deeper understanding of the characteristic distribution of prime numbers, which is a foundational problem in mathematics.
- Related to Mathematical Analysis:
His contributions to mathematical analysis were wide-ranging, covering the realms of real and complex functions. What made him stand out most in this field was the conception of very clear and concrete ideas, mathematically speaking, which made him a reference in this area of study.
The contributions made by Poussin to mathematical analysis were wide-ranging, covering the realms of real and complex functions. What made him stand out most in this field was the conception of very clear and concrete ideas, mathematically speaking, which made him a reference in this area of study. Finally, it should be noted that the clarity and rigorous exposition of his ideas mentioned above brought about an important change in the way in which the subject of mathematical analysis is taught, and his influence continues to this day.
Life and Performance.
Charles-Jean De La Vallé was born in the Belgian city of Louvain in 1866 into a family with a strong academic background. His father was a geologist specialised in the field of mineralogy and it was his father who inspired them at an early age to take an interest in science.
He first graduated as an engineer, but in engineering school he discovered a strong passion for mathematics, which eventually led him to devote his life to the study of mathematics. In 1891 he joined the University of Louvain, the University of Louvain, where he worked for many years as a professor and academic, leaving an indelible mark and legacy.
Key Publications:
- 'Cours d'analyse infinitésimale'.
This is already a classic two-volume work, which has become a bibliographical reference for many students of mathematical analysis. Not to mention his numerous mathematical articles published in prestigious journals that would end up helping the advancement of number theory and mathematical analysis.
The very brilliant Charles-Jean De La Valleé continued until the last years of his life to be active in mathematical activity, maintaining his mental acuity and brilliance in contributing to science in general, leaving a transcendental legacy in the Belgian academy of sciences, as well as worldwide.

His Greatest Theorem.
