The most beautiful animal / Siproeta epaphus 🦋
Warm regards, nature lovers
This time, I’m joining the May contest, THE MOST BEAUTIFUL ANIMAL📸🌏🌷 This is another lovely activity that allows us to honor the diversity and beauty of nature. Now, since the invitation is to choose an animal that is very beautiful—in fact, the most beautiful—I confess I found myself in quite a dilemma. First of all, because there are so many beautiful animals, even among the ugliest ones. You know, everyone has their own charm in life, and everyone sees things differently.
Well, after grappling with a dilemma of existential questions and standards of beauty, I chose the Siproeta epaphus butterfly for this showcase. This is a species of butterfly I saw in one of the many gardens along the public streets of the City of Eternal Spring, MedellĂn. “How beautiful!” I thought when I saw that butterfly—large, with striking colors, and unknown to me.
I was with my youngest son, who was accompanying me to the supermarket. As soon as I saw it, I stopped to take pictures, but it was very restless, fluttering all over some flowers. It was so hard to focus on it with my phone’s camera, but I persisted because I was struck by the beauty of that butterfly, which looked very exotic to me.
It was really hard to get good photos, but I tried to get a few decent ones, because she just wouldn't stay still.
After doing some research, it turns out that in addition to learning its scientific name (Siproeta epaphus), I also discovered that this butterfly is a symbol of Antioquia, which is why it’s common to see it in MedellĂn and throughout the Antioquia region. But honestly, I was seeing it for the first time. As a Venezuelan, I wasn’t familiar with it, but for the people of MedellĂn, it’s very common.
Look at those colors—I think those autumn hues are beautiful, a combination of browns, ochres, and white. During my research, I learned that it’s commonly called the “rust-tipped butterfly.” And rightly so—what a fitting name.
Among the poses I was able to capture are the following ones, which show another angle of her body with her wings spread as she fluttered. I was able to take these photos where, as you can see, the Siproeta epaphus has a brown body—a fairly dark color—and you can tell that it’s a large butterfly. At that moment, I estimated it to be about 9 or 10 centimeters. So, between its colors and size, it has a rather glamorous appearance.
I’ve already mentioned that she’s absolutely thrilled about those flowers, and it turns out that plant is called Buddleja davidii, commonly known as the butterfly bush. How fitting for me to find MedellĂn’s star butterfly on the butterfly bush. My friend was happy—I’d say practically wild—dashing back and forth among the bouquets of flowers that are a delicacy of the gods for butterflies.
This tropical beauty thrives in temperate climates like MedellĂn’s. She loves the warmth of the tropics because she’s mainly found in the warm countries of the Americas. In other words, she has no interest in northern North America or southern South America. The Siproeta epaphus is a beautiful and warm-hearted creature 🦋
Finally, the Siproeta epaphus gave me a few seconds of stillness. She settled down calmly, suddenly becoming still, and so I took a few final photos of her—the ones I needed to bring this post to a touching close.
So I’ll sign off here, inviting @emmaris, @zhanavic69, @vicent21, and @mergusa88 to join the Amazing Nature contest series.
A hug!
