I have long run Lubuntu on underpowered systems with less than 4GB RAM. So far, it has run like stable lightning everywhere I've installed it.

That's interesting... If my old laptop still worked I'd love to test this on it, but sadly the screen doesn't turn on anymore...

Many old laptops had a VGA socket for connecting an external monitor. If you're into repair at all, a blank screen is usually just from a burned out backlight... very cheap and easy repair on most screens.
