It's been almost 20 years since Britain's Simon Marlin and Sweden's Max Reich discovered what your ears hear now (are you old yet?): Johnny Taylor's "What About My Love" (1982). You've heard it in the past. five years. Future performances: Selected tracks from the 70s and 80s, funky and soulful, chopped, mixed, mixed, sometimes sped up and surrounded by synths and rhythms. This house hits strategy was not new, but it gave very good results for its time due to good judgment in the selection of samples and sources of inspiration.

Monster, a tool we started using in the mid-2000s, was still an independent thing, with producers looking for gold in older artists' records. In this case, they discovered Johnny Taylor chords in Simon's wife Lola's old record collection. They needed to add some vocal flavor, and since soul and RnB often inspire them, they discovered New Yorker Imarri's "Let Me Love You" a decade ago. The same vocalist Imarri also appeared on Anthony White's '93 club show Love Me Tonight.

It's "simply" doing research to find the right combination between the two. This fun video from Sonopro School gives you an idea of what editing a sample like "What About My Love" usually entails.

And what happened? This combination was literally a winner. Just one thing. And they kept the provisional name they gave the song, "Lola's Theme", referencing where the inspiration for the samples and material came from. It was the first license for the Nocturnal Groove label, founded by Simon, Max and Lola the same year. And it spread like wildfire.
