Hello science addicts! Today we are going to study the ecology of chironomids which are insects with two wings or (diptera) and which in turn are classified as: (brachycera) that is, they are insects that have reduced antennae segments! They have a large repertoire of species because to date more than twenty thousand have been discovered. Did you know that they are mosquitoes but that they cannot bite you? crazy right?🧠🦟
What are the Chironomidae🙇♂️🤔/Que son los Chironomidae👨🏫
Many people who have no knowledge of these insects end up confusing them with the "culicids" that is, with those that feed on animal blood, however the Chironomidae do not have this diet! When they reach adulthood, their main diet is the intake of nectar or some other similar substance! so they do not pose a "danger" to us!🦟🌅🌍
These animals are included in almost all the diets of many animals, so they are essential in the ecology of the planet, many invertebrates and small fish feed on the larvae that are aquatic or underwater! up to now freshwater species have been recorded and they literally grow in any type of benthic environment!🧠🦟💥
Ecology🙇♂️🤔/Ecologia👨🏫
Adults almost always lay their eggs in stagnant water that disappears after a short time, therefore they have very fast life cycles, this includes small lagoons, streams, there are mosquito larvae that are extremely resistant and can survive in environments with low content. of oxygen! when the eggs are laid the adults always establish themselves near water!🧠🦟
Adult🙇♂️🤔/Adulto👨🏫
As you can see, the one that it captures is quite small, normally it does not exceed 20mm in size, as you can see its appearance is similar to that of mosquitoes because it is thin and has long legs, but if you look at the antennae, they are feather-shaped, they do not have a specialized organelle for stinging therefore they are harmless, they stand on their two pairs of hind legs and keep the front ones up! almost all species are dark in color, and the feather-like antennae are believed to be used to procure females!🤔🧠👨🏫
The larvae are cylindrical and have several segments, despite not having legs, they have a false pair that they use to dig through the substrate, the larvae have various types of colors, they are whitish-brown, they have the presence of hemoglobin within the circulatory system when present hemoglobin are red!🧠🌍🦟
Their reproduction is like that of a fly, they have a complete life cycle with many phases, the reproductively active females place the eggs already fertilized by the male inside a body of water, when the larvae are born they remain on the surface feeding on particles , after completing the cycle, males and females frequent reproductive areas in swarms, adults live a few days, some weeks!🧠🌍
