Capture an alien🧠👨‍💻 / Capture un alien👨‍🏫🧫

For some time I was trying to decipher a species that I got in a stagnant water sample a few months ago, but I did not have enough clues to identify it, again in my research I captured something that moved very fast in the water and that had a " propeller tail", in my twisted head I even imagined that it was some kind of alien!! but if so, surely I wasn't writing this xD, the thing is that this "mysterious" creature led me to take a final step towards the identification of that even stranger animal! Join me to see who it is!🤔👨‍💻🧠

A difficult identification😮👨‍🏫/ Una identificacion complicada👩‍🏫🧠

It all started here, when I captured this animal that was not microscopic at all since it could be seen without using the "magnifying glass", but I had no idea what it was, searching the internet I couldn't find any clues that would help me find the identification and my only intuition was it must be the larval stage of some insect! consult some biologist friends who also shared my opinion! but the subject would not close for me and I would continue investigating until I managed to identify it! I was so worried about his "tail" because it was retractable, and I thought... Could it be some accessory for locomotion? Is it some feeding system? When I captured this "mysterious alien" its tail was very similar to the one I had found months before...🤯😮🤔🤔

I was prepared to decipher my mystery, observing their morphology they both had a retractable tail, but their functions did not seem similar, while in my "mysterious alien" the tail was propulsive in that other specimen the tail did not provide movement, and following my instinct everything it pointed to different larval stages, one more developed than the other... And suddenly I got this on the internet and I was closer to ending this mystery!😮🤔

Wow, what a great similarity there was between my specimen and this reference found on the internet, the mystery of "alien" was closer to being deciphered, we can see that the animal can measure about 2 centimeters, it is aquatic and everything corresponds to my specimen! but none of this would have been possible without these new photos, as I am a good detective it was time to understand what each structure of my "alien" was for...🤔🕵️‍♂️👨‍🏫

Wow wow... It turns out that our friend has a "tail" with a very interesting function, and it is a "spiracle" that is, a conduit where gaseous exchange takes place, basically here the "alien breathes", already in this point had identified our friend! but now I needed to discover more clues to better understand his morphology! What most caught my attention from our "alien" were his eyes! and there is an animal with "eyes" similar to this one!🔬🔬🧠💨
Vaya vaya...

Following the clues😮👨‍🏫/ Siguiendo las pistas👩‍🏫🧠

So, remembering my zoology II lectures at the university, clearly this is a "larval stage of a diptera", a "diptera" is a group of insects that have "two wings", such as flies, among others! After I have discovered that it is an insect, it is time to identify it. To do this, I must know which one lays its eggs in the water and which species has a larval stage like our animal with a "breathing tail". So I had to access a very interesting website that helps us with these problems!🤔🤔

We have now managed to identify our species, it is a larva of (Syrphidae), what are known as flower flies, they are common here in Portugal and various parts of the world! because they are flies that is why we observe their eyes with (omatidia) that would be individual eyes, therefore a compound eye of a fly can have more than 100 individual eyes! and that is why it is difficult to catch a fly!😮😮

Eristalis tenax🦟😮🧠

And we found our specimen it is (the drone fly), did you know that it was originally from Europe and was introduced in the United States? Apart from discovering that our "alien" is a fly, we also discovered that it is invasive and quite resistant and well adapted! Do you want even more interesting information? this insect performs a kind of "mimicry" over time, it resembled the honey bee, which we know has a very painful sting, therefore the fly is confused with the bee to confuse its predators! Sorry? that???😮😮

Evolved eyes😮👨‍🏫/ Ojos evolucionados👩‍🏫🧠

I want you to differentiate the two photos that I show you! Basically we see a high resolution view of the fly's eyes, as you can see when I stimulate it with light they look like that! We shouldn't worry about the fly, it's harmless, but don't be overconfident if you ingest water contaminated with the larvae, you could suffer from "myiasis" "which is a parasitic infection with fly larvae."😮😮

You were so interested to find out what the creature was and I glad you could denote something. The photos look similar, mayb they are from same family.
