¿Hablamos como escribimos o escribimos como hablamos?/Do we speak like we write or write like we speak?

Many speakers do not know writing due to illiteracy and, nevertheless, they do speaking what normally requires the use of the written word, as long as they do not suffer from any physical or mental disability. This is due to the fact that spoken language is learned spontaneously in the midst of people who speak.

Not so writing, which is a code that is not learned naturally, but requires a formal school study as an institutional means of teaching reading and writing, of more or less time, according to individual differences.

We tend to think in our concept of "graphocentrism" that today social life would not be possible without writing, given the immense wealth of graphic signs that have been invented to express, transmit and communicate our ideas, be they alphabetical, pictographic, signs and signs we use in everyday life.

It is interesting to note that graphocentrism has not been present in the entire history of the human species. Let us focus our attention on the fact that human beings only began to speak about a million years ago, according to De Mauro (1980). Or, if you like, as Halliday put it in 1990, 50,000 generations have passed since man realized that he could use the speech apparatus and express ideas through speech.

The logographic writing as such made its appearance in Mesopotamia about 3,300 years before the Christian era (Tusón, A. 1997). After that, it is had that the first known alphabet dates back to not before the second millennium before our era. It can then be assumed that during 99.5% of the time of human presence on planet Earth, only oral language has been used as a means of expression (Halliday, ibid.).

Logographic media were the early existing forms of the world's scriptural record, such as ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs, Chinese ideograms (though these represent ideas rather than words), Mesoamerican representations, and Asia Minor cuneiform writings, among others.

The logogram (from the Greek logos, word, and gram, writing) represents the minimum unit of a writing system, that is, a grapheme, which represents an isolated and complete word in itself, a lexeme or morpheme. In non-linguistic writing systems such as pictograms or ideograms, or even phonetic systems such as alphabets, abjads or syllabaries, where each symbol represents sound or phoneme or a combination of them and not words, lexemes or whole morphemes (https: //es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Logograma)

In the same way, it is certain that orality in language has always existed in all cultures. However, not all of them have writing, which is called agraphic communities, without denying the existence of graphic signs inscribed in petroglyphs or in pottery, weaving or other objects.

Dead languages that were alive
The languages that have disappeared from the face of the earth due to lack of speakers and writing, it will never be known what their phonetic and syntactic structure was like, as well as the prosody and intonation, which allow us to distinguish words of an enunciative or interrogative type, of surprise, or admiration, as well as the pauses and the accent of intensity to be able to recognize and differentiate words and structures, for not having oral registers and much less written ones. That is why they are called dead languages.

Other difficult aspects to establish in a dead language without speakers are the paralinguistic features, which would provide various information on the quality of the voice, which could indicate the sex and age of the person, as well as certain physical conditions or conditions such as aphonia, respiratory impediments. The tone and rhythm of the voice would externalize emotionalities such as nervousness or personal relaxation, indicated by higher tones and faster or slower speed and lower tones, respectively.

However, the existential persistence of the written code is what has allowed certain "dead" languages, even without speakers, to be known precisely because of the existence of their written versions, albeit fragmentarily, which corroborates the importance of the oral code that in its temporary use it gave rise to that writing. In the case of Latin, considered a dead language, it has remained only used by certain Catholic ecclesiastical sectors as part of their rituals, edicts and papal bulls.

The written code
It is evident that extralinguistic, paralinguistic and prosodic expressions are absent in a written text. While the written code presents some aspects that could be thought to be confrontable with the oral emission, such as, for example, the use of punctuation, the truth is that not always that there is a pause in orality, it would have to locate a comma or semicolon in the same written sequence or vice versa.

There are certain features and aspects in writing that are an obligatory and indispensable part of the organization of the text that cannot be equated with the oral, such as titles, subtitles and paragraphs, indentations and spaces between lines.

Instead, the punctuation, the type of letter such as capital letters, italics, bold and underlined, parentheses, quotation marks, abbreviations, which are peculiar in writing, can occasionally be "oralizable" or be equated with the oral to indicate some emphasis or some point of interest in what is said.

In speech it is possible to transfer some resources used in writing when you want to emphasize the importance of something that is said when it is stated orally "in parentheses" or "we underline" this or that thing. Sometimes quotation marks are used by gesturing in the air with the index and middle fingers to indicate what is said "in quotation marks."

Finally, it is necessary to indicate that in the written code a great social mediation predominates based on the general rules of normative spelling and grammar and the existence of style books in terms of their standard and cultured variety, setting their use through academic institutions of the tongue. In the oral field the dialect variants, especially in the phonetic plane, are evident, this aspect is obviated by the written code (Tusón, ibid.).
