Possible Escape Route from the Deadly Bladder Cancer.

Certainly, all cancer types are bad and no one prays to have one, but there are some forms of cancer that their names alone would send cold shivers down your spine. It is impossible not to get scared at the mention of bladder cancer, the first time I heard about it, another level of fear was sincerely created in me.

Unfortunately, bladder cancer is not so rare, as it has become a common type of cancer that begins in the cells of the bladder. About 10,000 people are said to be diagnosed with bladder cancer every year. The bladder is that hollow muscular organ in the lower abdomen responsible for the storage of urine. Most commonly, bladder cancer will start in the cells that line the inside of the bladder known as urothelial cells.

Urothelial cells are found in the kidneys and the tubes, these are the tubes that connect the kidneys to the bladder. Urothelial cancer can affect the ureters and the kidneys too, but their most common place is often the bladder. The DNA of a cell is filled with instructions on what the cell ought to do and what not to do, bladder cancer starts when the cells in the bladder develop changes in their DNA.

With the occurrence of these changes, the cells multiply rapidly and they continue to live even after the healthy cells die, the abnormal cells created will then form a tumor that can invade and eventually destroy the normal body tissue of the affected person, in due time the abnormal cells could metastasize all through the body.

Most of the cases of bladder cancer have been linked to exposure to harmful substances, these exposures would in turn lead to an abnormal change in the bladder cells after several years. Smoking tobacco is one of the common causes, and one out of three cases have been linked to smoking. Previously, contact with some chemicals used for manufacturing was also discovered to be a causative factor but has since then been banned.

Once it has been diagnosed, the classification of bladder cancer becomes dependent on how far it has spread. If cancerous cells are contained in the lining of the bladder, it is described as a non-muscle invasive bladder cancer which is the most common type that exists.

On the other hand, when the cancerous cell spreads beyond the lining into the surrounding bladder muscle, it is known as muscle-invasive bladder cancer, which is of course a less common one but has a high chance of spreading to other parts of the body. At the point where bladder cancer has spread to other parts of the body, it is known as metastatic or advanced bladder cancer.

Factors that can increase the chances of bladder cancer include;

  • Age: The risk of cancer development could increase as one advances in age, although it can spring up at any age, most of the people diagnosed with bladder cancer have been reported to be over 55 years of age.

  • Smoking, as mentioned earlier can cause the accumulation of harmful chemicals in the urine. When a person smokes, the body processes the chemicals found in the smoke and then some of them are excreted in the urine. The excretion of these harmful chemicals could damage the lining of the bladder, increasing the risk of cancer.

  • Chemical exposure: The kidney is very important in fighting off harmful chemicals from the bloodstream and having them move into the bladder, as a result of this, it is believed that being around certain types of chemicals would most likely increase the chance of developing bladder cancer.

  • Chronic bladder inflammation.

  • Gender: The male gender is more likely to develop bladder cancer than women.

  • Previous case of cancer treatment: Prior treatment with anti-cancer drugs increases the chances of having bladder cancer. People who received radiation treatments aimed at the pelvis for a previous cancer case stand a chance of having bladder cancer.

  • Family history of cancer.

There is usually no guaranteed way to prevent these things, but at least steps can be taken to protect oneself and reduce the risk of occurrence.
Smoking is a strong contributing factor, if you do not smoke then do not start at all, and if you smoke, seek help on how you can stop. Taking caution around chemicals is also important, then choosing to love fruits and vegetables as the antioxidants in them will help reduce the risk of cancer.

Visible blood during urination is one of the most common symptoms of bladder cancer, but the presence of blood is not a sure way to conclude the presence of cancer as other conditions can cause this too, there are other symptoms for its indication;

Painful urination: The feeling of a stinging or burning sensation felt during or after urination.

Frequent urination.

Consistent bladder infections.

There are usually four types of bladder cancer treatment, any of them or the combination of two or more may be used.

  • The use of surgery.
  • The use of chemotherapy.
  • The use of Immunotherapy.
  • The use of radiation/targeted therapy
