DNA Test is not only for Paternity Information

There are a lot more DNA tests going on in our generation than we used to have before, you will agree with me that the rate of scary stories about the true paternity of a child is what has triggered this action. Although a lot of women feel offended by the mere thought of it from their partner, there is a significant amount of individuals who still believe it is the best route to go whenever a child is involved.

DNA has only four letters; adenine (A), cytosine (C), thymine (T), and guanine (G). The lineup of the alphabets within a long DNA strand spells out instructions that tell each cell of the body about the molecules it should make.

What exactly does the process of DNA entail?

DNA paternity tests use deoxyribonucleic acid, which we all know simply as DNA. This is often taken from a cheek swab to help determine the biological father of the child. DNA is inherited from parents, each contributing half to the child. It is a genetic material found in body cells that can be used for the identification of personality.

But, DNA tests do not only cover, understanding paternity, they can also help to determine if there is a high risk of developing some conditions, the confirmation of the presence of a certain disease, and if there is an altered gene that can be passed to a biological child.

The test of genes helps to examine the gene and locate changes that can cause or increase the chances of a genetic disease. Here are some gene tests;

  • Targeted single variant looks out for specific changes in a gene known to cause a specific disorder. This test can be used to determine gene abnormality that is currently running in a biological family.

  • A single gene test looks out for existing changes in a gene, the gene searched for is the one known to cause a specific condition. A single gene test may be recommended if the symptoms of a condition that runs in a family are shown.

  • Gene testing panel tests for changes in more than one gene, this test type is used when there are changes in any of several genes that can cause one or more symptoms.

Changes can be detected in the genes or chromosomes of a fetus, the process is called prenatal genetic test, done while the woman is still pregnant. This test can determine the chances of the child being born with some medical conditions, if there is a possible risk that can develop due to the family's genetic history, or if there are signs that the fetus itself shows.

A DNA paternity test is carried out by taking a mouth swab from the alleged father of the child and the child. The information will be analyzed by forensic experts to help determine if the alleged father has enough matching DNA to show biological conditions.

Diagnostic testing can help rule out or confirm genetic disorders or chromosomal issues, this however does not test for all genetic conditions, but it can be used to confirm the diagnosis of symptoms.
The aim of this content is to help us understand that, a DNA test can be carried out to determine paternity, but in addition to that, other genetic conditions can be figured out through a DNA test. This can happen either before the child is born or after the child is born.
