Is Technology Making Life Easier or More Complicated?

Honestly, nowadays it’s almost impossible to live without technology. From the phone we are using, to the fan, electric cooker, everything around us is built on technology. The truth is, technology has changed how we live, look, and even how we think. Now, Indiaunited’s topic is asking us if technology is making everything easier or complicated for us.

Let me start with the good side of technology. Technology has made life much easier for us in so many ways. During the olden days, our forefathers used to walk or travel long distances just to pass information to someone, buy something from the market, fetch water, or even look for firewood. But now, we have smartphones and cars. If we want to pass information to someone, we either call them, message them, or even travel to their place if we’re missing them.

Also, before, people always went to the library to read or get information. But now, with smartphones, students can study online, watch educational videos, or attend classes. Even in hospitals, technology helps doctors find out what is wrong with a patient faster and treat them better. In our homes too, we have washing machines to wash our clothes instead of using our hands. We have electric cookers to cook our food, and blenders to blend our pepper instead of going out to grind them or other things we want to blend.

Another good side of technology is how it connects people. Through social media platforms, we can keep in touch with family and friends far away. We can even video call them if we’re missing them and want to see their faces. Because of technology, people now shop online instead of going to the mall, and many people now sell their products online without needing a physical shop, such as Temu, Jumia, and others.

Now, the bad side of technology is that many people now depend too much on it. For example, people don’t bother to memorize phone numbers again; they just save them on their phones. This reminds me of something that happened to me during my second semester 300-level exam period. I wanted to get information from one of my friends in 400 level who had graduated, but my phone was switched off. I didn’t know his number because I didn’t write it down.

I first went to meet my neighbour because she knew him since they were in the same level, but she wasn’t around. Then I went to another neighbour who was also in the same level as him, but she told me she didn’t have his number. What saved me that day was that my roommate had one of my friend’s numbers, so I called her and collected another friend’s number who I knew would have his number, and that was how I finally got to call him. Imagine if I knew his number, I would have called him directly with my roommate’s phone instead of going through all that stress.

Also, technology has made some people less active. Before technology, people always visited each other’s houses to check on one another, but now they stay in their houses and just call or message instead. Technology has also made many students lose focus on their studies. Instead of studying, they are on their phones 24/7, either pressing, scrolling through social media, or watching movies. Some even watch inappropriate movies.

In conclusion, there are a lot of good and bad sides to technology, but I’ll stop with these I mentioned. If anyone asks me whether technology is making life easier or complicated, the honest answer I’ll give is both. It depends on how we use it. When we use it wisely, technology will be a blessing to us. But if we use it carelessly, it will become a curse that makes us lazy, distracted, and dependent.
