It's January and it's raining without snow

I took this photo with my phone camera of a sidewalk in the rain.

Usually in January, snow accumulates, melts a little during the day, and then freezes again at night, making it slippery and dangerous to walk on the sidewalk in the morning.

This January, however, there was only one snowfall. Something is obviously wrong.

Have you ever heard of the Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg? I remember her sounding the alarm about climate change from the age of about 15. I learned the English expression "How dare you."

But the truth is that it was decided long ago under the Paris Agreement to reduce CO2 emissions and limit the increase in the average global temperature to 1.5°C from before the industrial revolution, but many countries slacked off and made no effort.

The president of some Latin American country recommended that capitalism, with its endless pursuit of profit, be stopped, but few people listened.

According to news from March 2023, the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) announced on the 20th that the temperature rise will exceed 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels, which is the goal to prevent major damage in the future. The latest report states that global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions must be halved by 2030 to prevent this from happening. The report emphasized that measures taken over the next 10 years will have an impact (on humanity and the planet) for thousands of years, and urged countries around the world to accelerate their measures. United Nations Secretary-General Guterres expressed a sense of crisis, saying, “The clock on the climate time bomb is ticking.''

The report begins by specifying that greenhouse gas emissions from human activities are causing global warming and that temperatures have already risen 1.1 degrees Celsius. It pointed out that the greenhouse gas measures submitted to the United Nations by each country are likely to exceed 1.5 degrees Celsius by the end of this century (and sooner), and that it will be difficult to reduce the temperature to below 2 degrees Celsius. He also predicted that if greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise without the strengthening of measures taken by individual countries, they could rise by up to 3.4 degrees Celsius by the end of this century.

Droughts, floods, and other damage have already occurred. Humanity has less than 10 years left to take countermeasures. The Earth may become a planet unfit for human life. Our generation may not see the end of humanity, but our children and grandchildren's generation may experience it.

This is no time for war.
