Happy Holidays, Hive!
Another Year Come and Gone
Once again we are well into December and I can't believe how fast it has all gone by. This is my first Hive post in months! The truth is, I really have gotten a bit burnt out with the blogging thing. I really don't go many places or do many things these days other than kid related stuff. @little-ricky is in preschool 5 days a week now, which has given me a chance to get back to work and start earning a bit of money again.
I've been doing an interesting job for the past few months, which I can't really say much about since I'm under non-disclosure. All I can really say is that I'm upscaling and restoring a popular 90s TV show for release on Netflix. It sure is a tedious process, but is a nice break from being jumped on all day by an increasingly heavy child!
The project was a great excuse to get a new laptop. I have piles of PCs and Macs around the house that are being used for various things. I was using my Mac Studio M1 Max for audio related tasks, and occasionally to process BRAW footage in resolve but I wanted to get something a bit more portable but with enough power to do serious work. Luckily the new M4 Macs came out so I got myself a maxed out M4 Macbook Pro.
I also went a bit nuts and bought a QNAP all NVME NAS which also has Thunderbolt. I managed to get 5 8TB drives at an awesome discount on that "Prime Big Deal Days" thing on Amazon. Man! There were some seriously good bargains going during that time. Hooking the NAS up directly to the laptop gives me amazing speed, and with all that space it is making life a lot easier working on this project. My old rackmount fileserver is still great, but is really not up to the task of video editing real-time.
I also picked up a gen 2 Asustor Flashtor 12 pro. I almost got the Gen 1 a few months ago, but heard bad things about the processor in it. The CPU was not fast enough to keep up with the drives. That being said, I am a bit dumbfounded by the crazy Frankenstein mash-up of NVME speeds/gens in this thing. It supports a total of 12 NVME drives, but they are all over the place. Luckily I only ordered 6 drives for it, so I'll test it and see how the transfer speeds are. This is meant to replace our main NAS so that @afturner can work directly from the network drive rather than having to work locally, then save everything later to the network.
I just realized that this has turned into an extremely boring post talking about tech that I've bought for myself. Anyhow, I realize that I don't get on here much these days, but I am still alive! I also continue to maintain my Witness node which has had very few issues. I did manage to upgrade to 1.27.6 recently and all is well. Hopefully I'll have more interesting things to report in the coming months. I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday season!
That sounds like some cool kit. I hope it makes the job easier. Good to have you back.

It has made life so much easier. I started the project on my M1 Max which technically worked fine, but it was taking twice as long to do anything. Plus, I desperately needed the extra disk space. I am moving along great now. Great to see you! Thanks for stopping in
Posting you on Hive after a long time. good comeback,, best of luck 🤞

I will try to post more if I can come up with anything worthwhile to say. Thanks for stopping by!
It is always nice to do what you enjoy doing. This gives one joy and a fulfilling life.
Glad to know Ricky has started school which would help in developing him academically and you are having more time engage in other stuffs like showing up here.
Yes, he has gotten a lot smarter and his communication skills have developed a lot since he started school. Plus it gives mom and dad a break! I can't complain about that.
That's awesome 👌
tech guy
hehe sometimes, yes.
Since you're working on such a project, you're probably going to be needing a very fast device with a lot of space. That said, it's probably good that you made a "I'm still here" post. Goodluck with it.
Yeah, I figured it was time to drop in. It seems like the crypto market has been picking up a lot since I've been gone. I wonder how long it will last this time!
Sounds like an interesting job. Good luck with it!
Those M4 Mac Pros are nice, aren't they? I traded in my M1 for one. Photoshop and Lightroom run so much smoother now!
I am absolutely amazed by this thing. I have it sitting on the same desk as my M1 Max 'Studio' mac. I love how you can just drag the mouse to the other computer and use your same keyboard and mouse on both machines without a KVM. I have noticed that if I run a video upscaling task on both machines at the same time, the M4 Max finishes in half the time of the M1 Max. Nice!
I know you have been busy, but have you seen my recent posts about the PeakD Plugin? That might be something you want to look into for your node. It looks like you have gotten some good stuff over the past year. I am tempted to pick up one of those new Macs just to have one. I don't think I can justify it though. I bought a Synology NAS a while ago for backups at my site. I have a pretty robust system now.
Hey man! No I haven't seen the post - I'll have a look tomorrow after work.
I hear good things about Synology. My biggest issue right now is that I have been using Crashplan for cloud backups for about 15 years, but it has become crap and can't handle the size of my backups. It started backing up at only 1-2 megabit per second and will take years to finish now. I am working on getting backblaze set up but I have to do a bit of rigmarole to get the cheaper non-server price. I have like 20-30TB to backup so I want the unlimited space.
The new mac is working fantastic with my current workflow going back and forth from Davinci Resolve to GPU intensive AI upscaling software. Technically I can get faster results with the GPU part upscaling with RTX 4090s, but for the rest of my work, the M4 just blows everything else away. It's a very pleasant computer to work on!
That's cool! I have been really impressed with the M chips since Apple launched them. I know there were some security issues with the earlier versions, but the performance is just phenomenal. I think Synology is kind of easy mode for a lot of people. If you have the skills (which I know you do), you can probably piece it together better and cheaper. @themarkymark turned me on to BackBlaze and I have it set up as an additional offsite backup for all of my servers. I think I pay like $10 per month and it stores all of my archives from Veeam.

Cute kid and the ginger bread house . ☺️
Happy holidays guys
Thanks, @jane1289 - Happy Holidays to you as well.
Yaaay..it's good to read you again.. Little Ricky is now a big boy hehe, and looking so cute as always.
He is getting huge! And heavy as well. I wish he would stop running and jumping on me. Especially when I lay back and close my eyes! He likes to run up and drop his full weight into my belly area.. Ouch!
😆 that's the perk of having an amazing dad like you.
