HEALTH IS LIFE

A lot of person's always says that health is wealth, but I disagree with that. To me health is life and why do I say so? One have to be healthy to be alive same way you have to be alive to be wealthy.

There is this emergency situation that was brought into our hospital on Sunday by 12 noon. A 31 years old man that came in the company of his mother and another you g man that drove all of them to the hospital. He was unable to walk on his own thus making us employ the use of a wheel chair. On coming in I checked his vitals and it was ok, called on the lab scientist to come check his sugar level which is low, his blood percentage was 20%, his eyes upper extremities and lower extremities were pure yellow . I called on the Doctor on duty who came and asked him some questions of which he prescribed some IV fluid since he is negative to hepatitis B and C we have to be careful of what ever that we are giving him because any hard drug will totally varnish him from the surface of the earth. The doctor set an IV line and he was placed on IV fluid which will help replenish his strength and raise his sugar level. After which he went through the scans he underwent before coming to our hospital of which showed that his liver is inflamed same with the gall bladder and some other findings of which he was sent to do liver function test.

Did I mention that this patient soiled his pants with faeces? Well yes he did so after some minutes of which two IV fluids were rushed on him he got some strength and he changed from those soiled pants. After he was stabilized, he was moved into the ward for continues management.

When the Doctor on night duty resumed duty she wrote for blood transfusion which was commenced and he tolerated it with close monitoring by the nurses on duty through out the night.

In the early hours of the morning he said he want to use the rest room of which he was being assisted by the health attendant on night duty of which she was encouraging him and asking him to be a man on which he replied her saying " someone is dying and you are talking about being a man" at long last they had to serve him a bed pan of which he went to toilet successfully but after standing he wasn't able to successfully clean his anus of which he was assisted by the health attendant.

While she was still doing that he slumped, he was carried up onto the bed, CPR and chest compressions were conducted by the doctor yet no response, and was pronounced dead at 6:57 am.

Why did I share this story? This guy was sick and instead of seeking medical attention from the right places, he was busy buying over the counter drugs. He told no one of his illness till it was late and when he finally decided to seek medical help he still went to a hospital where the nurses aren't properly trained owned by a private individual. Am not saying that private hospital is bad, but there are cases they can't handle which will warrant them referring you to another higher hospital and I have seen alot of cases which were refered by private hospitals but couldn't make it into our gate alive. But if in a situation that person went straight to a secondary or tertiary institution where we have different specialist who work together for one sole aim.

Firstly this guy is aware that he has liver issues yet he couldn't keep away from alcohol and self medications. The most painful aspect of it being that he is the only surviving son of his parents, his two elder brothers are dead, one fell from the tree and died while the other died while swimming. Leaving his parents with just two children alive which are both ladies with the elderly one a sickle cell patient and the other whose genotype is unknown.

In all we do in this life our health should be our priority, we shouldn't jeopardize it for anything because you have to be healthy to be alive same way you have to be alive to be wealthy.
