Winter Night Lights

Winter Night Lights

Page break.png
LIGHTMIST SCRAPER

01_LIGHTMIST SCRAPER.JPG
Page break.png
Second shoot through darkness searching for light to colour blast the night. What can I capture trolling some dark parts of the city in areas my eye falls on light? It was even colder than the daytime snow walk I did for Snow Job. I gave myself an internal boot to boot up and get out there a second time after the sun went to sleep.

These photos were taken in a different area of the city than the daytime shoot. It’s a part of the city I typically avoid after dark, since it’s not a good neighbourhood. It’s gang territory. I wanted the photos in this area, due to the lights. I’ve been waiting, steeling my nerve to wander there after dark with my camera, to take you on a light walk.
Page break.png
LIGHTMIST TOPPER

02_LIGHTMIST TOPPER.JPG
Page break.png
These first two shots are of a very tall skyscraper on the edge of the neighbourhood. The top of the building has a lighted exposed terrace surround with a roof above that. Mist pouring forth from the top of the building caught my eye through naked trees.
Page break.png
LIGHT TUNNEL

03_LIGHT TUNNEL.JPG
Page break.png
Further along this small side street, two different types of street lights combined to create a light tunnel. Speedy swirl finger click fast to catch it.
Page break.png
WINDOW WEB

04_WINDOW WEB.JPG
Page break.png
Window watching has taken on a whole new meaning at night. I’m not one for peeping in anyone’s windows. Light displays and what I can capture have altered that. This one was shot from the ground, side of a townhouse, second floor. The pattern created is from a ceiling fan inside and bare tree branches on the outside.
Page break.png
PINK FENCE

05_PINK FENCE.JPG
Page break.png
As I started my walk, a fire engine on full colour speed raced ahead of me, taking a different route. I half-debated on a race chase for those flashing lights before it took off out of sight. Ten minutes later, we meet again where it’s parked on a side street, lights still brashly bashing through the dark. It was meant to be. Cast colour flashes on a black metal fence, pink, then red, with notes of blue and hue on snow.
Page break.png
RED FENCE

06_RED FENCE.JPG
Page break.png
DISTORTED PATH

07_DISTORTED PATH.JPG
Page break.png
Almost to the center action, all quiet, no guns blazing, no one crazing, blanketed in silent snow cold, fire not blazing. There’s a globe light on a stone embedded post fence corner. It’s growing red hairy vine branches sleeping, dreaming of green leaves.
Page break.png
HAIRY GLOBE LIGHT

08_HAIRY GLOBE LIGHT.jpg
Page break.png
The next six photos were taken in the centre of this neighbourhood. It’s densely packed with high rise apartment buildings. It’s one of the poorest neighbourhoods in the city, where people have struggled to survive before I was ever born. Many of the balconies and windows are decorated with all manner of lights. They stay up year round; only the December holiday lights are eventually taken down. People love coloured lights here. At the very minimum a string of white lights often decorates balconies.
Page break.png
LIGHT BALCONY

09_LIGHT BALCONY.JPG
Page break.png
There was a single string of white lights on this balcony and two light sources inside the apartment. Several people have this purple light in their apartments that creates a glow inside and outside. I’m not sure what the source is for that light. A floor lamp of some kind is the other light source inside. I can only see so much several stories from the ground, unless I can grow wings like a bird and flap up there. Why can’t I be a hawk? Sigh.
Page break.png
TREELIGHT SHOWER

10_TREELIGHT SHOWER.JPG
Page break.png
A window adorned with very simple lights, plus a small green tree. The background light source is the interior apartment light, most likely an overhead source.
Page break.png
STARLIGHT SHOWER

11_STARLIGHT SHOWER.JPG
Page break.png
The balcony of the same apartment, adorned with many more lights and a star.
Page break.png
YELLOW ZIGZAG I

12_YELLOW ZIGZAG I.JPG
Page break.png
YELLOW ZIGZAG II

13_YELLOW ZIGZAG II.JPG
Page break.png
YELLOW ZIGZAG III

14_YELLOW ZIGZAG III.JPG
Page break.png
There was a single light source for this apartment, a small jelly bean yellow light string. Lighter tones are reflected ambient light from inside apartments. Dark vertical shapes in the first of these three photos are bare trees. The blackness of the trees in contrast to the brilliant yellow caught my eye with its simplicity of a single colour set against tones.
Page break.png
ELECTRIC SNOW TREE

15_ELECTRIC SNOW TREE.jpg
Page break.png
I’m out of the hood now, on the fringe again. A tall bright street light lit up the snow on this fledging tree. Snow or ice on naked dark trees caught by light at night; these highlights have caught my eye for many years. This is the first attempt at photographing what I see in my mind, beyond what is physically manifest in front of me.
Page break.png
ELECTRIC ICICLE

16_ELECTRIC ICICLE.JPG
Page break.png
Back on a main street now, different direction, with several abandoned buildings waiting to be demolished, forever spreading condo land. Big money in jail sized tower boxes.

One of these abandoned buildings has an oval canopy with a few icicles stabbing down. I walked off the street and leaned my back against the boarded up door, doing some calisthenics for onlookers (people were staring), trying to freeze frame light icicles.
Page break.png
SHUTTERLIGHT WINDOW

17_SHUTTERLIGHT WINDOW.JPG
Page break.png
I’m on the sidewalk, crushed up against the snow to the side, I shot this window in an old house, semi-shuttered against the night. I couldn’t see the light sources clearly, only one lamp. As I shot it, a bus was zipping past horizontally streaking through with additional underline light.

The next two photos are shot further along looking towards a small side street from a main street. In the first photo, there are young trees with lights strung on them, behind which is a new monster high rise. Snow reflected red light, stage set for dancing light.

In the second photo, an old house machine melded to the monster condo in some mutant manner sits on the corner, facing the main street. Multiple light sources from street lights, lights on the trees, interior building lights, vehicle lights, and signs mixed together for this shot.
Page break.png
LIGHT DANCERS

18_LIGHT DANCERS.JPG
Page break.png
LIGHT HAUNTS

19_LIGHT HAUNTS.JPG
Page break.png
Almost packing it in for the night, double dip into frozen finger land, I was heading home to have one more thing catch my eye. Blue neon lights, wine store bottle sign lights, shot through double glass window pane.
Page break.png
BLUE BOTTLE GLOW

Those places you don't go after dark are popping up all over the place and not just at night..... For women.

Hashtag Broken. The mailbox is like 100 feet away from the door and I won't check it without locking the door behind me out of habit if Pura's home. It's only getting worse. Sorry it's that way. It's embarrassing. I could go on forever.

Thank you! I have already joined the community and read several posts. I'm working my way through a lot of great work there. Fascinating stuff. I had the thought today that it's much easier to work with a crew of people to expand the exploration.

😂 It does. I found it hilarious when I saw it, the funny pic of the lot. I appreciate you catching that. Thanks @meesterboom! Btw, been wondering about your name for a bit. How'd you decide on that user name?

Yes, it really popped out as a scary beast!!

Ah the username. I had a cat named Oranjeboom way way back and I affectionately called him Mr Boom. I bagged the name mrboom for my first email account but because email was not huge back at first I rarely used it and forgot the password. Then I couldn't reset it because I had supplied nonsense personal details when setting it up.

So I had to get a new mail address and as mrboom was taken already but me I had to come up with something else but I still liked MrBoom. So I thought, I know, what about meester boom! And that's it. It has stuck.

It wasn't till I joined here that I learned it means something in Nederish!

:0)

And nineclaws - I do like that one, does it have a tale? A cat perhaps?

Oranjeboom? That's an unusual name. I tried pronouncing it but I'm putting a French accent spin on it. I have the feeling that is incorrect. Thanks for telling me the story. I'm now wondering about your cat and how it came to get that name. One of my flaws, I'm always curious.

It wasn't till I joined here that I learned it means something in Nederish!

I don't even know what that is, which begs yet another question. 😂

Thanks, "nineclaws" does indeed have a tale, although I do not have a tail, unless it's invisible.

A native friend gave me the name "One-of-many-Claws" a while back. I'm skilled at quite a few things and do my best to help others wherever possible, so that's why she gifted me that name. It's rather special and not appropriate for me to take as a user name. I had the user name "Nine" on discord and after some joking around with @hiveqa, who onboarded me Hive, I settled on "nineclaws". So it kind of came partially from something serious and partially from joking around.

It's a very cool name. I am glad you settled on it! Hiveqa! There is a name I remember. We chatted occasionally on steemit. I wasn't sure if he was still about. Good to hear he is and actively bringing folk on.

Oranjeboom comes from a beer I tried when I was quite young that seemed mysterious because I could barely pronounce it. I actually think the beer might have been crap but of how the name tickled me. Nederish is the language of the Dutch so I have been assured by some of the fine Dutch fellows on here!

Thank you! Lol, he's around but not really posting on Hive, despite my prodding him. I thought you most likely would have connected with him and wanted you to have the full picture for a laugh. He's hanging out in his own clubhouse but we regularly smack each other around on PAL discord server for entertainment and laughs. He was really good about onboarding me and is still helping others that way.

I would never have guessed beer. It's reminding me of homemade "orange" beer my father used to make, ghastly stuff.

Thanks for de-mystifying Nederish, LOL

I enjoy the technique you use in creating these photographs. I was a bit lost upon seeing the first few images, but those that followed - like Window Web and Distorted Path - captured my full attention. And the bold-colored photos that followed were like an avalanche in my mind.

Great post! Thank you for sharing these images with us.

Cheers!

Thank you @braveboat! When you say you were a bit lost regarding the first few imagines, what did you mean? Thanks for appreciating Window Web in particular. It's a bit more on tones than colours, but is one of my favourites. I like the way you describe how you saw the rest of them with your word choices.

Thanks for checking out my photos, happy to share them, cheers!

I meant to say that I didn't understand what was being presented with the first few images. As I read your post and encountered the next few images, it began to dawn on me what I was looking at. I'm slow, but I catch on eventually. lol

Cheers!

😂 I got into taking abstract photos, so I can see why. I'll tell you something funny. There are enough shoots where I get home, am going through the photos, and hit some that I have no idea what they are. It's only because of the sequence of when I shot others before and after that I can recall exactly what I photographed to get the weird abstract thing I'm looking at on the computer.

I can be very slow at times, which means more laughs.

Cheers!

It’s gang territory.

You're brave, if a gang ever stops you, you know what to do, start spitting some of your bars 🔥💣💥🔫

I’m out of the hood now

Glad you made it out of there safe! 😎
I imagine you as a Gangsta Nines with the hoodie on, dark night, taking pics ready for the war with the hazards of the world! 😎

I love all of your pictures, my favourites are LIGHT TUNNEL, DISTORTED PATH and TREELIGHT SHOWER

But I also love the 3 YELLOW ZIG ZAG and the BLUE BOTTLE GLOW!

I think as I said earlier I love them all and it's hard to choose the best, you got some great way of taking this crazy pics, how do you do it?

Hope your weekend is going to be a good one 😎

Not so much brave as aware and spitting bars would incite things I wouldn't want, lol. Every situation is different and you have to be attuned in the moment to what that is, then you know what to do. Avoided many things that way.

No gansta here, I look quite ordinary, lol. Was out taking photos last night and for whatever reason, three different strangers initiated conversation with me (see, no scary gansta here). It's the camera, it's always the camera. If it were a phone, no one would notice. 😂

Thanks for all the kind words you've left for me to read @trippymane, I appreciate that. I can't pick one favourite out of this bunch either, there's several I like for different reasons, you've hit most of them, LOL!

how do you do it?

Short formula for anything creative, anything in life:

Practice, practice, practice. Patience. Practice, practice, practice. Patience. Learn everything you can wherever you can. Patience. Practice, practice, practice. After you do enough practice, you stop thinking about what you're doing, the technical aspects and it becomes a highly intuitive natural process. To really take anything to it's peak of experience, you must become it.

As an example, the photography I do, while I am shooting it, I am one with tool, subject matter, and the camera lens becomes my eye. Whatever I am intuitively pulled to as subject matter, I shoot. Not every shot is going to be good, many are mediocre, some garbage, some are really great shots. I don't give that any thought, I focus only on what I'm doing in the moment. That's how it works for me.

Thanks and hope you have a good weekend also! 🤗

I see, good to know you're aware this world is a dangerous place and know how to keep yourself safe! Avoiding the fight at times is winning the fight!

I know you're not a gangsta ahah but I just imagined you in that character for a short moment when I was writing that comment lol

Thanks for all the kind words you've left for me to read @trippymane, I appreciate that. I can't pick one favourite out of this bunch either, there's several I like for different reasons, you've hit most of them, LOL!

A pleasure, cool to see that I've spotted the ones you like 👀 we may be wired in a similar way then 😂
To be honest I really liked DISTORTED PATH too but it did scare me a bit, it resonates to me as the Scary Distorted Path we've got to walk every day, the one that we call Life!

Your formula is indeed the right formula to get good at whatever you want in life, kudos to you and to all the time you spent practising, it shows in the pictures, some are incredible IMHO!

Thank for your explanation, now I see how you become one thing with the camera and your creative process. Very inspiring 😁

Thanks and hope you have a good weekend also! 🤗

Thanks a lot 🤗

That's kind of what was in my mind at the time, have shot this light path thing a few different times now (another one last, night, lol).

Hahaha, glad to shed some light on the process. I'm simplifying it, but that's the general approach. Thanks! 😊
