The Reliability Factor: Public vs. Private Services

At my age now, one thing I do know about life is that having money is a good thing. In fact, it’s more than good, it’s great because you get to have access to stress free private services instead of having to stick to public services all the time. Throughout my educational life, I had attended private schools until I got to experience the public side of education in senior high school.

My school was ranked as one of the best girls schools in the country but being there in that moment, I didn’t feel I belonged there . Why because everything was different. In my previous private schools, teachers had time for students and the numbers in the class weren’t huge. Having to sit in a class with over 40 other girls was a new thing to me and i had to adapt quickly. But I eventually got used to it. This experience coupled with my university education has been my longest experience with public institutions and I can tell you that I did enjoy the change but it wasn’t want I expected.

Speaking on behalf of the average Ghanaian, we all wished we had enough money so that we could stop using public services. This is because first off, government owned institutions have the worst of the worst when it comes to employees. Imagine walking into an office and no one minds you. It’s like they’re not there to serve you. And even when you find someone to help you out, they end up tossing you around until you get fed up. This is what actually happened to me today when I visited the Ghana revenue authority for some work.

I don’t even wish to talk about the issue of public hospitals. You see these nurses, just thank your stars if they don’t end up giving you a wrong prescription aside from the fact that they would always be shouting at you like you’re their kid. One thing I’m very happy and thankful to God for is the fact that my family has a personal doctor and we mostly used that growing up. Because I can’t imagine having to visit a public hospital and getting treated like shit after hours of waiting when I can just call my doctor to book an appointment and I’m all set.

Comparing governments institutions to private institutions, they both have their pros and cons. Services rendered by government institutions are way cheaper as compared to private institutions but when it comes to quality , private institutions win. When we talk about good customer services, private institutions wear the crown also because why else would they be charging you this ridiculous amount of money for petty things. And oh, some of these civil servants are most likely to cheat you on a normal day.😂

I for one would always choose private services over public services because I really don’t have the time, patience and energy to deal with all these bitter government employees. Aside things that are solely related to the public sector, in everything I do, I wish to go private. Because why not?

Which means their rudeness and nonchalant attitude is the same everywhere, I felt it is because there is no one to monitor their conduct yet they get paid at the end of the month.

I totally agree with you, and your experiences with public schools and hospitals is relatable, so I see and know why you'd prefer private services to avoid poor treatment and all. There's the urgent need for improvement in public services.

Thanks for sharing.

Well... if your countries and my countries public services is bad... its terrible because it is the duty of the State Government to ensure certain things are free or affordable and accessible at least.

Education, healthcare, transport, medicines... should be public... private would operate for profits so some Government services should be mandatory... decent quality... even rations and such things.

Private can co-exist but has to be regulated.

Problem is our Government system by default is curruption filled. It's unfortunate, citizens deserve affordable healthcare, housing, education, transport and food services. From here, they can pick on their economic plight! But our system won't change, and average people will live a bad quality life.

Yess... private is good, but even there you must do your research and choose service providers that give quality services... I wish they are affordable as well though.

I suppose internet should also be free, but not under complete Government control, a dept should took into it... same for sanitation, water... some basic facilities for decent life should be built!

Anyway!

The corruption is just too much in my part of the world and we continue to suffer each and every day.

Maybe, things would change for the better soon.

Lol, a lot of public sector is always patronised because of the affordability, that's why people are much there compared to private sector
