The Robots Are Here!

A few years ago, I was watching Henry Danger on Nickelodeon with my kids for the first time when I saw Captain Man and Henry communicate with their wristwatches. I almost got freaked out seeing Captain Man's hologram appear to talk to Henry, and vice versa, but then I told myself it was some kind of film trick.

I guess anyone my age would have felt the same way because we come from a generation that wasn't familiar with those kind of stuff. It wasn't long after that I started seeing even holograms of reporters appearing during News Hours to give news reports.

Of course, all this is made possible by reason of Artificial intelligence.

Interestingly, some organisations industries have been making use of Artificial intelligence long before it became so popular.

For Instance, a relative who was working in an oil development company once told me about how they use AI in their off-shore oil explorations, but it sounded like something out of fantasy Island at that time.

The Positives

Now AIs are being used in so many ways even by the average person, especially if you have an android phone or an IPhone.

These AIs can serve as personal assistants, help respond to some messages by giving automated response, help take notes during meetings, use prompts to create content including text and images.

In the Entertainment industry, we find AI being used to create and edit music and videos. Someone can have a song recorded, mixed and mastered without having to visit a physical recording studio. Also, the use of drones in video shoots is possibly an extension of AIs and robotics.

Apart from that, you can create visuals in seconds simply by giving specific instructions to some of these AIs.

Recently I learnt that AIs are being used in the medical sector to help in research for improved diagnosis and treatment of diseases. I am interested in seeing how this would play out.

Then, there is also the education sector. Gone are the days when people go to the library to search and search for days, weeks and months for information to use for academic projects and research. AIs have made the job easy.

The Negatives

One thing I find as a negative implication is that many students and researchers (including content creators) use AIs for research and forget they need to filter information as machine information can be redundant. This happens because people are too lazy to make the extra effort to cross-check the results of their findings or add the personal touch that is lacking.

Also there is the fear of people losing their jobs and becoming irrelevant. Definitely this is happening and will continue to happen ... similar to the days of the industrial revolution.

My major concern about using AIs is the issue of privacy. In the name of creating tailored content, they ask for so much personal information that one runs the risk of sensitive information being exposed.

Like it or not, AIs are here and more are coming. It is important to know how to use them to our advantage or else one kind of loses relevance in this digital day and age. However we need to find ways of protecting our data.
