My Digital Minimalism Journey: Learning and Growing

It is interesting how fast the digital world has continue to evolve and develop over time. infact the rate of technological advancement needs to be a case study in schools. Each day, new technological tools are being made, and the existing ones are continually improved, and advanced. These tools, ranging from smartphones and laptops to computers and tablets, no doubt, serve useful purposes and have become an important part of our daily lives.

For some people, especially those whose livelihood and means of generating income depends on them, these tools are essential part of their daily activity . However, when not used rightly, can become harmful. For example, the chances of becoming addicted to them, which can have a negative effect on one's life, are very high.

Personally, my work revolves around the internet and technological tools, but the rate of my addiction to these tools, especially my smartphone, is quite alarming. Waking up without my phone beside me or just the thought of having a low battery can affect my mood for the whole day. my phone has to be the first thing I use each day I wake up.

To reduce my addiction, I decided go on a digital minimalism journey. Digital minimalism involves an individual choosing to reduce their use of technological tools for their personal wellbeing.

The main purpose of practicing digital minimalism is to improve well-being, increase concentration and focus on more important things, and not allowing these tools to boss us around. Digital minimalism is not about completely staying away from the use of the internet, technology and its tools but rather being careful about how, when, and why they are used.

As someone whose work revolves around technological tools, digital minimalism is a perfect practice for me to reduce my screen time and improve my personal well-being. As a digital minimalist, one of the things I do is set a schedule of tasks, their duration, and reminders to notify me when it's time to stop.

knowing I have a specific time to stop, helps me concentrate better while working. It is similar to writing a computer-based exam with a timer. Knowing that the computer will turn off automatically when the time is up helps the student to focus and aim to finish on time.

Being able to enjoy offline hobbies is yet another benefit of being a digital minimalist. Before, my phone and laptop were literally everything to me, which is why I get bored and sad when I had a dead battery. Over time, I have realized that there are many more ways to have fun and be entertained. infact there are a thousand and one offline fun activities to engage and explore.

What about reducing stress and having more me-time? Often, I would complain about not having enough time to rest or even get enough sleep. Most times, I would stay up as late as 10 pm or 11 pm at night, not working or doing anything meaningful. Many can relate to the migraines associated with not having enough rest, especially at night. It even affects your mood and productivity the next day.

Being a digital minimalist has helped me increase my focus, set and stick to my boundaries, concentrate better, accomplish tasks within the stipulated time, and still have enough time for other offline activities. It is a journey that is very necessary for my well-being and I don't regret being a digital minimalist.

Very nice. As powerful and useful as these technologies are, they can take away too much from one. You're taking control and trying to maintain balance with your digital involvement, and that's great. Is there an app or something that you use to monitor your phone usage? I'm curious.
