AI: A Necessary Evil? Exploring Artificial Intelligence Among High School Students

Hold on a little before you come against me for writing against technology that has helped men in all aspects. A breakthrough in technology that has positively impacted the lives of all and sundry. I am writing this post as an individual who has come face to face with artificial intelligence and who has also benefited from it. However, as the saying always goes that whatever has an advantage, has a disadvantage. Nevertheless, having to face a disadvantage on a thing is not enough to prevent or deter one from doing the right thing as he ought to have done.
I happen to be a teacher in a high school. I teach teenagers and I spend most of my time with them conversing and relating well with them. As a result of this, I am aware of their weaknesses and strength. I also know what they are capable of doing. Before the development and introduction of artificial intelligence like Meta AI and ChatGPT for example, my students were so hardworking and striving to but in their best to find solutions to word problems as well as mathematical problems. But today, the reverse is the case. My students are becoming dependent of AI for solutions to all educational problems. One of the challenges however is that most of them are becoming overzealous about using AI. Artificial intelligence is meant to help humans and enhance their creativity toward eliminating or reducing errors in whatever they do.

Artificial intelligence is indeed replacing humans. That means they are taking over the brains of humans (the lazy ones). I see no reason why humans will allow machines to take their place instead of partnering with them to make their work easier and seamless. As a high school teacher, I have used artificial intelligence to develop my lesson plans, and my lesson notes as well as for research purposes and it has helped me a long way to make my work easier compared to when artificial intelligence was not on course. The right use of artificial intelligence I think depends on the user. A lazy human will remain lazy even without the presence of artificial intelligence.

Early exposure to artificial intelligence to teenagers and children is not helpful in anyways. The way teenagers think and are also bent on immediate gratification is enough for them not to have a bite of AI because it will destroy their ingenuity and will end up causing dependence. As a teacher, one of my recent instructions on home funs is that the use of artificial intelligence is not allowed. It is an intentional way of deviating their minds from overdependence on artificial intelligence for solutions. Some questions require deep thought that the answer would only make sense if the human mind was used extensively.

It would be a gross foolhardiness to overrule artificial intelligence because it causes overdependence hence killing human ingenuity and creativity. The fact remains that, technology is here to make life easy for everyone. At the same time, it is proper to use them with care before they cause more harm than good.

True talk, AI is good and also bad depending on how one uses it. We should partner with it and not allowing it to do the work.

And exposing a student early enough to those softwares is not really helpful
