Water Supply Pipeline for Swine Farm. Preparation of the Longitudinal Profile /Conductora para al abasto de agua Granja Porcina. Confección del Perfil Longitudinal.
Good afternoon, StemSocial Community and fellow Hivers.
We continue to make progress on our project. We are now wrapping up with the longitudinal profile drawing. In a previous post, we already explained the importance of this drawing and what it consisted of. It is nothing more than making a cross-section of the terrain and plotting length against elevation.
Every linear infrastructure project requires a longitudinal profile drawing: whether it is a sewer collector, a highway, a canal, or a pipeline. In the previous project, we also created this drawing, but in that case, it was for a canal, where information specific to that type of work was included. In this case, since it is for a pipeline, there is common information such as distance and elevation, to which other parameters are added: velocity, flow rate, hydraulic gradient, pressure loss, and the pipe's pressure rating (PN).
Before showing the finished profile drawing, we will explain how we prepared it. Many years ago, about 30 or 40 years back, this and the rest of a project's drawings were made manually. The designer would hand the information over to a draftsman who, using graph paper and technical pens, would draw it out. Of course, depending on the scale of the work, it could take days and days of labor, especially if multiple copies of the same drawing had to be produced.
Nowadays, creating a profile is very fast; many CAD technologies allow it to be done automatically: AutoCAD Civil 3D, Land, CivilCAD, Topograph, among others. In our case, we used DISPER (2014 version), a proprietary software from our country, Cuba. Despite its age, it is very intuitive and convenient to use. I would venture to say that over 90% of the hydraulic designers in my country use it to draft profiles, and this drawing can be prepared in just 20 to 30 minutes.
Without further ado, here is the step-by-step process for preparing it in our projects:
Image #1. General view of DISPER configuration.

Here, we input the values into the software that will be used for earthwork: trench width, excavation slope, and the thickness of the sand bedding on which the pipe will rest.
Image #2. Importing topographic data.

With this window, we import the distance and elevation parameters, having previously saved them in a .txt file format.
Image #3. Section data.

Here, we enter the hydraulic parameters at the start and end, or by sections: diameter, flow rate, and pipe type, which were previously obtained from the hydraulic calculation.
Image #4. Profile preview.

Once the data is entered, the software provides a preview of the profile through a window in its own interface. In it, we can edit some parameters to add the final touches to our drawing.
Image #5. Export window to AutoCAD.

Naturally, this option could not be missing. DISPER offers the possibility not only of generating the drawing within its interface, but also of exporting it directly to AutoCAD format, saving us a considerable amount of work time.
Image #6. General view of the final drawing obtained in AutoCAD.

In addition to drawing, the software places air release valves and drain valves along the profile, calculates and tabulates earthwork, draws a typical excavation section, and generates the legend as shown in the image.
Image #7. Close up view of the final section of the profile.

In this view, the previously mentioned hydraulic parameters can be observed in detail.
Image #8. Close up view of the earthwork, excavation section, and legend.

To help the reader visualize it more clearly, we created this view, which can also be seen in the general view, but at a smaller scale.
That concludes our presentation on how we proceeded to obtain our longitudinal profile drawing.
The images and explanation are entirely my own work and belong to this project. If you have any questions, feel free to leave them in the comments. See you soon

Buenas tardes, Comunidad StemSocial y demás Hivers.
