Protección contra inundaciones. Sistema de Drenaje Pluvial. Granja Avícola. Introducción/Flood protection. Stormwater drainage system. Poultry farm. Introduction.

Buenas tardes, Hive.

Good afternoon, Hive.

We have a new job. In this case, we have been requested to design a storm drainage system (rainwater) for a laying hen farm. Over time, and due to the unevenness of the terrain, small puddles and depressions have formed around the pavilions, along with other factors that currently hinder water evacuation and runoff during rainfall, causing water to enter the interior of certain pavilions in some cases.

To carry out this work, we already have a detailed topographic survey that will allow us, a priori, to conduct a runoff study—that is, how rainwater moves naturally across the terrain.

For this case, the initial strategy is:

  1. Runoff study

To do this, we will use the topographic map. With Civil 3D software, we will automatically perform a slope study, which will show us how water moves on the surface when it rains. This is the foundation for directing the channels.

  1. Layout of the tertiary channel network

These channels will be located adjacent to the pavilions, parallel to them, establishing a graded slope between the pavilion and the channel to force the runoff to flow into the channel. Based on the topography, it will then be determined whether it is better for these channels to drain to the right or to the left, as the case may be.

  1. Layout of the secondary channel network

These will be the channels into which the tertiary channels drain; therefore, they will be larger as they accumulate the water flow from them. They will be located perpendicular to them.

  1. Layout of the main channel network

They will collect the runoff coming from the secondary channels. Thus, they will have the highest conveyance capacity.

  1. Location of culverts

Occasionally, due to the existence of a road, a pedestrian walkway, or another requirement that coincides with the layout of any of the previous channels, the use of a culvert will be necessary so as not to interrupt passage.

  1. Hydrological calculations for each component (channels and culverts)

This is the foundation of the design. It consists of determining, through a calculation procedure, the flow rate that will circulate through each component of the drainage system.

  1. Hydraulic calculation and dimensioning of components (channels and culverts)

Once the parameters from the previous step are obtained, the hydraulic calculation will be performed, yielding the dimensions: bottom width, height, side slope, slope, and water depth in the channel. HCanales software will be used for this calculation.

8. Graphical drawing of plans

At this stage, starting from the finished design, the topography, and the general layout, the profiles will be drawn based on the relationship between distance, ground elevation, and the bottom of each channel. Setting-out plans and other details will also be included. AutoCAD Civil 3D software will be used.

  1. Earthwork volume calculation

Using the profiles themselves and Civil 3D, through the typical excavation cross-section, we will obtain the earthwork volumes.

10. Preparation of the bill of quantities and activities

Basically, it is prepared in tabular form. The majority will consist of earthworks, with a smaller amount of low-strength concrete for constructing the culverts.

11. Budget

Based on the aforementioned list, and using unit cost items, the total investment cost will be obtained through the budget. This is a matter of great interest to the investor.

12. Descriptive report

All the details of the project are described here in written form, generally in Word format: objectives, current situation, calculation methods, bill of quantities, environmental impact expected during construction, and mitigation actions.

See you soon.
