When Will Meme Tokens Die?

IMG_3035.jpeg

I mean it’s something on everyone’s mind isn’t it? Especially people in crypto who’ve decided to stay out of the meme drama and watch from the sidelines. I’ve heard about how hard the meme token trend will crash at some point in the future like a gazillion times.

If I say they sound like a broken record, if you’re part of the “they”, you’ll stop reading this post and I don’t want that, so what if I tell you that I know exactly when it will happen since everyone seems to be sure about the crash but no one seems to know when it’ll really happen. Stay with me.

Meme Tokens vs. ICOs: Similarities and Differences

People are quick to compare Meme tokens in 2024 to the ICO era and I get it, they both kinda thrive on hype and social media buzz rather than intrinsic value.

Just like ICO tokens, meme tokens can experience extreme volatility, with prices skyrocketing based on community hype and then crashing just as quickly.

But hey, their similarities typically end there. Unlike the ICO era, which was driven by ambitious technological promises and the potential for revolutionary applications, meme tokens are more about community engagement and cultural phenomena.

They’re not trying to change the world – they’re trying to entertain, to create a sense of belonging, and yes, sometimes to make a quick buck.

Here’s where it gets interesting: the sustainability of meme tokens largely depends on their community. As long as there’s a passionate group of people backing them, creating content, and spreading the word, these tokens can thrive.

The moment the community loses interest or moves on to the next big thing, that’s when the crash will happen.

Iggy Azalea and $MOTHER: A Case Study in Hype

Let’s look at a typical example of Iggy Azalea's $MOTHER token. We all agree it’s been all hype, maybe hype with a sprinkle of ass here and there, but this hype is what got the market cap of the $MOTHER token to what? $250m in less than 3 days? People must really love her or her ass. But that’s not even the point.

All “HYPE” with some ASS

IMG_2931.jpeg

The interesting thing is that she’s not even promising a technology that will change the world like them ICO days, many investors started as fun, are doing it as fun and will always see it as fun because what does an ex only fans star and music artist know about technology in the first place right?

It’s easy to think like that as normal people we are but what if that’s just one side of her, people say, the Marketcap is not sustainable and will crash soon, and I don’t doubt it, they say the token has no real world use case, and there won’t be a demand for it, they even said it will crash in 3days, yet dogecoin is over $20billion and has been around for how many years? Wif no ass 🤷

Utility or Perception?

But news flash, somehow It’s past 12days since launch, but the market cap is still over $150m, perhaps there’s something more than ass sustaining it.

One might argue that meme tokens like $MOTHER don’t need traditional utility to sustain value. Instead, their value could lie in the perception and collective belief of the community. If the holders believe in the token's potential, whether for fun, profit, or as a social movement, that belief alone can drive demand and sustain value.

What about her latest tweet where she revealed that she will be relaunching the telecommunication company she co-founded and people will be able to purchase phones, or month to month cell plans using $MOTHER or Sol? How’s that for Utility then?

Beyond the Hype

While the initial surge is often driven by hype, the real test is what happens when the hype dies down. For $MOTHER, the sustained market cap suggests that there might be more at play.

Perhaps Iggy is leveraging her celebrity status and social media prowess to keep her audience engaged. Maybe there’s a strategic plan behind the scenes to maintain interest and add some form of utility to the token. And the interesting thing is that this is not possible for only Iggy alone, there are thousands of people like her with a huge loyal community and they haven’t even started yet.

So When Will Meme Tokens Die?

So, when will meme tokens die? The answer is complex. As long as there are communities that find joy, entertainment, and value in these tokens, they will continue to exist. What I see here is that there are people who will forgo financial gains for a shared experience, maybe it’s the ass🤷.

Doge did it didn’t it? Over 20 billion marketcap is no joke, and doge had no ass. How much more some real ass?
