Baking Soda and Vinegar Fizzing Experiment 🌈🌈

Fizzing Colours!!

Toddlers and preschoolers love this baking soda and vinegar experiment. It is well known that when you put these two ingredients together magic happens! And most children are amazed by it. Actually adults too!πŸ˜‚

Homeschooling little children has to be fun! It has to be easy and keep their learning desire alive! You can think of activities for days and plan them on a schedule or you can find a learning opportunity to your way on the market. Eather the case, don't forget that their understanding is amazing and they learn from simple things, sometimes even when you don't expect them to!

I find homeschooling my son to be easy at this age, and I surely embarce it and enjoy it! Hopefully you do it too!

Kids love the colourful, bubbling eruptions that result when baking soda and vinegar are combined. So we did a RAINBOW! 🌈 (rainbows are my thing, so we did a lot of rainbow stuffπŸ€πŸ™„)

This experiment is easy and inexpensive to set up!

In addition to being fun and entertaining, this activity is educational too. You’ll have an opportunity to discuss colour, colour mixing and chemical reactions, fine motor skills.

What you actually need are the following:

  • baking soda
  • vinegar
  • food coloring or liquid watercolors
  • one tray
  • one pipette/dropper

First thing to do is to put baking soda in a tray. I used an inox tray because it's easy to clean up.

❗❗ Food coloring is quite messy and it sticks on the surfaces and clothes so make sure you can do this without having to change the furniture or painting the wall again LOL.

Or maybe they'll create some art directly on the wall and you just put a frame on that πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ joking

Or you can do it outside, or you can prepare the space for it. Make sure to supervise your child when doing this activity. You can stay back and let them enjoy this experiment, but still being actively present in case they want to try throwing everything out.

Then you'll have to mix vinegar with food coloring.

Here's what I did. I only had blue, green, red and yellow colors so I had to mix them in order to get a purple and indigo. I actually enjoyed trying out these before my toddler! It's quite relaxing and fun for the brain! I put the mix in little glass jars.

After this, you're set! Let the fun begin! He was so amazed! I can't remember if this was the first time or secoond time we played with baking soda and vinegar but it's always a hit! His face is priceless when he sees all the fizzing. πŸ’–πŸ’–

He was 2 and 3mo when we did this activity tho.

Using the pipette wasn't that easy but not to hard as well. He could easily squeeze it but he used to do it before getting to the tray. πŸ™„ So this one right here, it's such a great activity for fine motor skills development.

You can use a simple plastic non-colored pipette. We have our set from Learning Resources, Jumbo Colorful Eyedroppers - Set of 6 with Stand.

I helped my toddler using these eyedroppers until he could do it on his own. He's still not fully in control, but he's doing just fine. And now that I'm writting this article, I'll set up for him this activity again , except the rainbow. Let him do whatever he likes, the thing is to practice dropping with his pipettes.

In the end, he just did his own thing.
He tried making some numbers and combine colors.

The activity was productive as I predicted. Most important thing he had fun with it. After this, I bought 2 kilos of baking soda 🀭 (or maybe you know it as sodium bicarbonate, as I do).

I sort of did this myself a couple weeks back. When my stomach was hurting, I really wanted some eggs and I hate eating plain eggs without ketchup. It's my own homemade ketchup and has a good amount of vinegar in it, not good for a hurting stomach. So I thought I'd experiment with a small amount and mix a little less than 1/4 tsp into it. It was fun stirring it to make the bubbles. I did it until they'd mostly stopped then tried it on the eggs. Not the sharp vinegar flavor but all the rest was there and it was good on the eggs. I win!

That sounds interesting! You mean boiled, scramble or fried eggs?
I never tried eggs with homemade ketchup. My mom uses to make some homemade ketchup too. And I lile it very much!

You combined that 1/4 tsp of vinegar with baking soda or you combined the ketchup with 1/4 tsp baking soda?

Scrambled or fried, with the ketchup

I used about 3 tbsp of ketchup and put 1/4 tsp of baking soda in it, stirred til stopped bubbling

What a beautiful experiment really something that the little ones will love because it is not only colorful but also the reaction of the vinegar in the soda and the explosion of the colors is beautiful and shocking for them. I love it super creative.

I didn't know that this reaction between soda and vinegar plus the colors could be achieved, the kids will love it, it looks super fun plus it exercises their fine motor skills with the application of the vinegar colors to the soda. Excellent. Thank you

Yes! You can do it with the kids if you have sodium bicarbonate and vinegar (any type). If you dont have food coloring, maybe you can try it with liquid paint. The easter is coming and you can find food coloring everywhere. Also it can be found online.
My pleasure to share the idea with you!

This is so cool! I never knew this. I'm going to see if I can do this with my daughter soon. Need to think about how first (what to use for the baking soda) but this is a great idea! Thank you :)

Nice job to your kid. My kid also loves painting, I think I can do this activity with my son. Good afternoon.

Most kids love to paint, isnt it? Yep, is super easy and you can do it without the coloring as well. Just baking soda and vinegar and its enough. The bubbling gets children crazy. πŸ˜„πŸ€
