That's a pretty big change! Signal was for me an example for an app that does serves one purpose and does that right. As much as I welcome crypto adoption, I'm not sure combining this with Signal's privacy / encrypted messaging approach is good here. The more features, the more attack surface...

Fair point, and there was even push back from within Signal when it was first announced they were exploring the integration of MobileCoin, for that exact reason. It opens them up to attack from regulation but someone's got to do it eventually! Might as well be them, a publicly funded not for profit organization in favour of open sourcing their tech.
